Launch Parties to Help Tell the Windows 7 Story

Last night, many employees here at Microsoft (including me) received an email from Tami Reller, Chief Financial Officer and Corporate Vice President for the Windows Business Group. Her email invited Microsoft employees to host a Launch Party for Windows 7 – and we’re extending this invitation out to you! These Launch Parties will be a way for everyone to get involved in the excitement of the launch of Windows 7 on October 22nd. You helped make Windows 7, now you can help launch it!

These gatherings can are a way for people who are excited about Windows 7 to bring together their friends, families and acquaintances to see the experience the product. They can happen anywhere - at home, in a cafe, at schools, or at other community gathering spots and can be as flexible and creative as you and your circle of people. I’m thinking about hosting a Launch Party myself and thinking about where and who to invite to my party when I host it.

If you live in one of the countries where Launch Parties will be available for you to host, you can apply here to be a Launch Party host. In order to host a Launch Party, your application must go through a review process first. If your application passes the review process, you will be sent an email letting you know you have been accepted. A MyParty page is created for you by House Party where you (as the host) can add who you want to invite to your party and invite them. You will also receive a kit to help you with your party, including Windows 7 Host Help Videos and Host Notes (demos) and other materials to make your Launch Party fun.

Todd Bishop wrote a good blog post talking about Launch Parties which is worth reading if you’re interested in hosting one!

Note: If you don’t live in a country where Launch Parties are available to host – don’t worry! You can still hold a Windows 7 gathering of your own. We will be providing Windows 7 tips, content, demos, and training online starting September 15th for you to host your own gathering or “meet-up”.

Brandon: I seriously doubt this blog post was written with a straight face.

qmt49, why do you say that? Would love to hear your thoughts on Launch Parties (constructively of course).

Hi qmt49,  Brandon doesn't have to live the nightmare of having to upgrade an office full of Windows machines and having to deal with software incompatibility introduced by Vista/Win7, upgrade machines with extra RAM/Video just for the OS (not the apps that run on the machine) and deal with driver issues for all the various equipment in the office.  Actually the list of things that needs to be done is much longer, but the benefits of all this effort is very limited.

Meanwhile, I've just had another staff member here bring in his brand new notebook computer from home and ask me to remove Vista and install XP.  So that's another few hours of my life I'll never get back.

I decided already end of July to host a launch party, I've been so extremely happy with my own Win7 experience (Beta since Feb, RC since June) Tried to advertise the idea ( www.sevenforums.com/.../18595-windows-7-meeting.html), want most definetely to have a party to remember launching of Win7.

Cool idea, wish I hadn't just moved to the east coast or I would totally want to host a party.  I don't have many friends or family around here, otherwise great idea for those that have a nice place, and a good computer setup to show Windows 7 off, great networking for people in the IT field to.

Hopefully theres some giveaway/competitions (coupons) for guests as well as hosts with these parties.

If this party idea is a success, maybe this could be repeated for a Project Natal launch.  I recently bought 2 Xbox 360 Live Vision webcams for the family, but Natal will blow those away if it works as well as we all hope it does.

    Off Topic

Actually its amazing how much you can learn from your 4 year old about computing, my kid has recently started Google searching for images of Sea Creatures, and can describe how he searches which is very different to me but its real interesting to see the learning process.  First you click the E (IE) then the g (Google) and then.... "what do octopuses eat"....

Last week he complained that Google was broken because it had shoes in the middle (the OO were Michael Jacksons feet), he didnt like that the pictures changed each day and were confusing.

Ok The Windows 7 story is this:

For anyone who Paid for Windows Vista Ultimate(extras) saw no real extras just trash and we don't even get a discounted deal for upgrading to Windows 7 Ultimate (that Ultimatly will have no extras either) But we will loose One key feature and that is bit locker. I think Microsoft should be ashamed!

Canadians are being invited to register for the house party but are finding out that after they register that Canada is not included. Why are Canadian being invited to this (in both English and French) if Canada is not to be included?

When will the rules be updated to include the other 13 countries that are suppost to be included in this promotion but are currently excluded? (Even though customized invitations for each of the countries have been sent out!)
