What are people saying about the Windows 7 Release Candidate?

We did this before with Windows 7 at PDC and the Windows 7 Beta – I figured it’s time to do it for the Windows 7 RC. Here are a handful of quotes of what people are saying about the Windows 7 RC:

Ed Bott from ZDNet wrote:

Overall, I’m impressed with how reliable this Windows release has been. It also seems more than adequate in terms of performance.

Dwight Silverman from the Houston Chronicle wrote:

This latest test release is good. Really good. In fact, it’s good enough that, were Microsoft to call this the finished version and release it formally, it would be a much better product than Windows Vista was when it launched in early 2007.

Preston Gralla of Computerworld wrote:

Windows 7 RC1 includes a substantial number of productivity and performance tweaks that make an already solid, fast, entertaining and useful operating system even better.

Simon Bisson of ZDNet talks about his long history testing beta and RC bits of Windows and how the Windows 7 RC compares:

We've been using Beta and RC code since Windows 3, and this is by far the most solid and feature-complete RC we've seen.

Jeremy Kaplan of PC Magazine wrote:

Bottom line is that Windows 7 Release Candidate is more polished than the beta; seems to be better optimized for operating speed, responsiveness and improves user experience.

Matt Buchanan from Gizmodo digs the new backgrounds we added to the Windows 7 RC (I do too!):

Yes, these are just a handful of the ridiculously awesome backgrounds packed inside Windows 7.

Samara Lyn from CRN was impressed with the work we have done with Windows 7 and with our partners on driver compatibility:

Another blessing with Window 7 RC is that there were no issues with drivers. It looks as if Microsoft and vendors really got on board with ensuring driver compatibility.

This is what Mary Branscombe from the Financial Times had to say about the Windows 7 RC:

For end users, Windows 7 is a clear leap forward, and if the final version has the same high quality and attention to detail as this release it should appeal to customers and PC manufacturers alike.

And here is what Joshua Topolsky from Engadget said:

One thing we can say for sure is that it felt snappier and less buggy than the earlier versions (duh), and it's clear that Microsoft has taken a lot of the feedback it's gotten to heart. RC1 shows off definite attention to detail.

"more than adequate" doesn't sound like the best phrase to quote.

Well on the whole Windows 7 is definately an improvement on Vista in terms of performance and from XP in terms of appearance.  It takes the best pieces of all the prior versions of Windows and brings them up to date.

Personally I love the new peek at desktop, desktop themes and background shuffle features, UAC now works the way it should do. IE8 is better in RC than in the Beta, new features like in Private browsing are a nice plus.  Lots of little things have been updated slightly, giving a polished result.  Overall I would say that Windows 7 isnt revolutionary but it does deliver everything you expect from Windows, and people (me included) will want it on their new PCs.

Hopefully Microsoft will get behind Windows 7 100%, and keep improving on it up to its release and beyond, it has the potential to be very, very popular.

The only downside for me is that Libraries and the new Taskbar take a while to get used to.  Once I realised the taskbar and quicklaunch have been combined in Windows 7, the interface started to make more sense to me.

At first I disliked Libraries, however they have grown on me and now make more sense to me than when I initially started using Windows 7, and I think this feature could help a lot of people organise their electronic media/files, me included.

Homegroups are also a cool new feature that I can see people using.

Windows 7 is just a well rounded package, it does what its suppossed to do...be an OS, and it does it well, very well infact.  So well that many have been running the Beta and RC as their primary machines.

The best part is that Windows 7 is an OS first, this time Microsoft didnt get distraced by adding lots of optional features that most people will not use.  They have added in features that most people probably will use, hopefully this new focus on the consumer will pay off for Microsoft and for the rest of us!

Windows 7 is a dramatic improvement over Vista in terms of performance.  Windows 7 is also not quite as annoying as Vista with all of the pop-ups (although I still get a few annoying pop-ups).  All-in-all, compared to Vista, Windows 7 is a vast improvement.

However, I think it is necessary to not simply compare Windows 7 to its immediate predecessor (Vista), but to also compare it to the version of Windows that I currently prefer (XP).  Compared to XP, Windows 7 does look more attractive.  However, Windows 7 does have higher system requirements than XP and it many parts of it seem more sluggish than XP.

A lot of people I know have also commented that Windows 7 looks more like Mac OS X that previous versions of Windows.  I think that Windows 7 looks more like Vista than any other comparable OS.  Compared to Mac, Windows 7 also seems slow and it comes with less tools to simplify my life and more "nice to haves" that I just don't care about.

Overall, I think Windows 7 is a huge step up from Vista.  But it is not a major leap forward from XP nor does it seem to surpass Mac OS X.

I was so thoroughly impressed with all the releases up until the RTM.  The beta releases were my primary operating system, and I was touting everything about Windows 7 to everyone I know.

Then the RTM release came out, and it all went downhill from there.

My initial version was x64, so that's what i stuck with.  Prior to RTM, I hadn't rebooted more than what was required for installs and updates (never because of errors).  Within the first two days of installing (clean install) 7100, I was having to reboot 3-4 times per day.  Same drivers, same software, same everything as during the betas ... so I can't understand the problems.

Tuesday, I gave up with x64 and decided to try the 32 bit version.  While it did tame some of the errors and reboots, it was still nowhere near as stable for me as the beta versions of x64, and in fact, it added all kinds of other issues with folder permissions on partitions and external hard drives.

I'm not bold enough to say that everyone will have that disasterous of a time with it, but I am thoroughly disappointed.  Whatever Microsoft changed made it unuseable for me.  I truly hate that I had to go back to Vista.

Congrats guys.  I'm loving it.  I just feel bad for Nick White.  After taking all that heat for Vista, it's too bad he can't be here for some praise. Man, I always felt sorry for that guy.  It should have been Allchin here instead.

    That's because:

    1.  Almost all reviewers say what others are saying, no one has the nerve to go against the unanimity.

    2.  None of the reviews really has an opinion of his own. Especially when all of them are strong fanboys.

    3.  Vista was so bad that Windows 7 shines in comparison. XP is getting old although it still beats Windows 7, even Windows 2000 beats Windows 7 in terms of UI and usability.

    4.  Few ppl really know the total ins and outs of Windows, especially all areas of functionality built by various teams.

    5.  No one reviewer has even done a comprehensive review covering Windows 7...comprehensive like how the Wikipedia articles cover Windows Vista. Everyone is just bothered about the new features, not fixing the mess that Vista created.

    6.  Everyone's idea of quality is pretty sub-standard. The bar has been set pretty low although Microsoft continues to say "Highest quality release every shipped".

    7.  None of the reviewers are really bothered about removed features.

    8.  Stability, features and performance are certainly great, compatibility is acceptable but usability is really really poor.

    9.  Microsoft is successful in putting a positive spin by disclosing only ready-to-ship features and showcasing the engineering efforts.

    10. This post will be ridiculed, made fun of, quickly erased, modded down or attacked by every possible commenter.

Forgot to add: The beta was never really open and incorporating feedback. The OS was done before public beta.

I'm using the RC version of Window 7 on my Macbook Pro. I must say it works great. I haven't been a fan of Windows since Vista came out. But this Operating system is a must have.

Hi lollht... yes Nick White did a great job running these blogs, at a time when Vista was getting a lot of bad press, some justified, but much of it just people picking on Microsoft because well they're Microsoft!

Hopefully Nick will be glad to see the results of the hard work he started and Brandon has continued pay off, he helped lay the foundation for an open dialog between Microsoft and its customers.  This in turn has lead to Windows 7, a great product that took the feedback of average users, tech experts + alot of hard work at Microsoft to bring to fruition.

Seem like Nick is still innovating in the social media arena over at BuzzCorps
