Internet Explorer 8 Helps with H1N1 Flu (Swine Flu) Education

Microsoft’s own Peter Neupert has some good thoughts on technology and the H1N1 Flu (Swine Flu) today:

With the media hype machine driving minute by minute coverage, it’s hard not to think about devastating epidemics and pandemics of the past—typhoid fever, smallpox, etc…—illnesses that spread uncontrollably and killed millions.

While we should be concerned, we should also remember just how far we’ve come in facing these challenges. Today, the Internet, blogs, instant messaging, and other technologies can disseminate information about new threats and new medical knowledge faster than ever before.  Technology gives us the opportunity to face these crises better than we have in the past.

Check out some of what the Center for Disease Control and Prevention is doing in social media for an example of this good work: www.cdc.gov/socialmedia.

We on the Windows Team are excited about a small role we’re playing here putting Center for Disease Control and Prevention health tips and World Health Organization news updates at the top of people’s browsers through a new Swine Flu Web Slice for Internet Explorer 8, now available at www.ieaddons.com. Education and awareness is key to helping prevent the spread of this threat and in furthering medical knowledge around the globe and we’re hopeful this solution on Internet Explorer 8 can play a role in helping people stay up-to-speed.

UPDATE: Check out this blog post from Microsoft Evangelist Giorgio Sardo on how he made the Swine Flu Web Slice for Internet Explorer 8.

The H1N1  flu seems to be in the news every day, it seems unusual that it is killing so many in Mexico, and is milder here in the USA and elsewhere.  This would suggest that it is widespread and was detected fairly late or that it spreads very fast. There is also a possibly that the strain in Mexico might be slightly different to the US version (both are H1N1 but are they identical?).

The danger with H1N1 viruses if I understand it correctly (which I may not - take my word like you would Joe Biden's) ...is that because it jumped species, and is unusual genetically and hence has an unusual phenotype, most humans will have no acquired immunity to it so it can spread in a population without resistance.  Hopefully the co-ordinated measures that the governments of the world are taking will limit its spread, and hence its ability to mutate to a more deadly strain.  Which is the real concern... Not that its out there, but that it has the potential because it jumped species to spread and mutate is much faster than the average flu.

Personally It doesn't worry me much right now, but it would if people start dying from it in unusually high numbers outside of Mexico.

In many ways if the H1N1 turns out to be on the whole quite mild, that could be a very good thing as it may lead to some limited resistance in some populations.

Either way its nice to be able to get up to the minute news on the net.

The only thing that I cannot stand is there is no option for classic start menu. I have never like the "new start menu" in XP or Vista and run the classice in both. To be honest if the "Classic Start Menu" will not be part og Windows & I probly will stick with Vista and XP on my systems. I have alwasy installed the latest OS on my main system but will not put up with the new start menu untill I have no choice which will be a long time comming !!!
