Laptop Hunters: Meet Giampaolo

I’m probably not going to make it a habit to blog about each and every TV ad we do but I thought it would be nice to highlight the next ad in our Laptop Hunters series. This time we’re introduced to Giampaolo, a recent college grad and engineer. Giampaolo is looking for a laptop that has portability, battery life, and is powerful – for under $1,500. Here’s how his “hunt” went:

Laptop Hunters #2 - Giampaolo

In case you missed my introduction to Laptop Hunters (and the first Laptop Hunters ad with Lauren) – you can read my post here

$1500, wow thats a lot of money.

The guy really does have "really big hands" so I guess you had to do the responsible thing and give him a higher budget for his needs.

Nice dig at the Mac in this advert though, kinda an agressive advert.

    Works well.

I saw my laptop on that ad that he was browsing through. :P

Oh yeah I saw the Mac dig too!

I wonder how much Microsoft paid him to say that, even though they did make a valid point.

That's a great commercial! Get ready for some Apple junkies to rip it apart... something like "for only $2,000 more he could have gotten a Macbook Pro with the same specs AND bluetooth!"... something to that effect...

Can you give us a model number/configuration of the one he got?

Hi! Here is an idea for your next commercial.

Go around looking for Gaming PCs and compare it to "non-PCs" wink wink.

That would be an awesome advert for PCs and Windows.

    Hi cfischer83,

Looks like Engadget has the answer to your question, I quote:

"he walks out of Fry's with an HP HDX 16 that features a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo, NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT graphics, 4GB of RAM, and a 500GB drive -- raw numbers that would cost you $2,499 from Apple, although you'd be getting a vastly better display. Fair?"

Actually theres some more info on the net about this ad, some good like it was shot at the San Marcos Frys Electronics (which is a real nice store and totally better than the one in San Diego, although Frys is a great store in general, hope it expands to more places to fill the void of CompUSA and Circuit City.

Some bad though like he should have got a higher res screen.  On average though I would say its a winner as it helps shed off the John Hodgman PC user stereotype, and replaces it with the "real" young guy with big hands "Giampaolo" or young lady who lit a fire "Lauren".

Check out the specs or buy at Frys:

    shop2.frys.com/.../5806793

Giampaolo you should have got a more expensive laptop dude, hey thats just me though.

Im guessing you got a pretty sweet deal out of it though free laptop and internet fame!

Perhaps the best thing about these ads though is I cant imagine they could be parodied by apple easily, they would only draw attention to the ads which would kinda defeat the purpose.  So I would say a definately a win for the Microsoft Marketing Department.

Now this ad barely makes any sense. Giampaolo's selection falls short of at least two out of three of his main requirements:

    - Portability? The beast of a machine he chose is one of the heavier laptops available, weighing in over 7lbs, with some of the chunkiest dimensions!

    - Battery life? Most reviews from real people that I've read for this laptop have said it manages less than 2 hours. That's pretty poor by modern standards. (Related note: the Microsoft Laptop Scout website doesn't offer battery life as a filter... or doesn't seem to mention it... at all. Seems like an glaring omission.)

At least Lauren got the 17" she was after. At $1099 -- presumably post mail-in rebate -- is Giampaolo's choice "too cool" for her too? (Choice may be one of the messages the series promotes, but there's already a lack of coherency across the first two ads.)

Still no mention of the one thing Microsoft provides for the computer: "Nice work. It's [Vista Home Premium]." Neither customer starts with the requirement for Windows, and that has to be worrying to anyone thinking long-term. They only end up with Windows boxes because it happens to be preloaded on the machine they chose.
