IE8 Gets You Where You Want To Go, Quickly

As any browser vendor will quickly point out, accurately measuring the performance of a browser is extremely complex. On the surface, testing performance seems quite easy… visit a few sites with one browser and then again with a different browser, and simply time how long it took to load the page.

In reality, it’s much more complex than that.

Many things need to be taken into account when comparing the page load performance of different browsers. For example, due to the constantly changing nature of the Internet it is not easy to tell if the exact same content was delivered to each browser for each test. ISP’s, routers, and cable modems often cache their content, meaning that the page being loaded isn’t always coming all the way from the web server. The amount of network traffic can easily change between tests. All of these things (and more) can dramatically effect page load times.

Unfortunately, tools to accurately benchmark browser page load times don’t exist. All of the existing browser benchmarking tools available today are either narrow in their scope (SunSpider, Celtic Kane), inaccurate (iBench), or don’t consider important factors such as network latency, network congestion, and caching.

In the absence of effective benchmarking tools the Internet Explorer Team created a real world test which took the above mentioned factors into consideration and created a level playing field for all browsers tested. The results when comparing Internet Explorer 8 page load times to Firefox and Chrome were captured on video:

IE8 Performance

The performance video visually compares page load times between IE8, FF, and Chrome. Of the top 25 most popular sites in the world, IE8 wins 48% of the time, Chrome wins 38% 36% of the time, and FF only wins 16% of the time. Of course, they didn’t cherry pick the sites they tested. They chose the top 25 sites as reported by ComScore in December 2008.

We encourage (and expect) people to run their own tests to measure page load times and for the browser industry at large to create a test that can accurately measure page load times – as seen by the user – across browsers. To assist people in running their own tests the Internet Explorer Team has also created a whitepaper which describes techniques that can be used to contend with some of the complex issues mentioned above.

Hi Slimy, doesn't mean I can't post on it here as well ;-)

    Thanks!

I use MSIE all (99.9%) of the time, and I really do ignore most of the bad press because I know you don't. Thanks.

The other times I use Firefox because at critical times MSIE just refuses to load a page (example, a "please delete my billing information" opens an error page.).

Today, on the windowsteamblog page, An error occurred such: (see below), and I suspect most users would not know how to interpret it. Shouldn't these messages be going to the webmaster? Ok I haven't got a suggestion for that one but then again I also don't know what this means:

    Message: Expected ';'

    Line: 228

    Char: 61

    Code: 0

    URI: www.microsoft.com/.../6d53ed7b-f784-4c00-b145-3c1123debc40

chitbill, that is an error regarding the embedded video. Did the site load and just throw this error where the video should be?

  5. Posted on: March 12, 2009 at 2:59PM

The page appears (at a fast skim) to load perdectly, using

8.0.7000.0 of msie although with the aforementioned error, after clearing my cache, etc. Firefox hasn't any error.

I hope you see that since only the authorized owner of a website can make changes, errors are less than helpful unless they point to something wrong with the browser's browser, or their setup.

More importantly, a webpage loading badly is better than not loading at all, and

Least importantly (except maybe to PC World et al) are a couple seconds of speed.

And now a request, from foot in mouth sufferers, can we be allowed to edit (or even delete) Comments, thanks.

I generally use FF most of the time, however recently I have been using IE8 more often than previous IE releases.

Ok so an issue I have with IE is not page load speed but browser load speed. I have to agree that IE 8 does load a lot faster than 7 but it is an important item to consider anyway in testing.

Item 2: Why not make IE8 for Macs? considering Safari runs on Windows .... :)

a red flag to a bull! give it a week before you see replica videos  on youtube showing personal experiences.

i just loaded www.digg.com on a fresh IE8 and fresh chrome build. IE8 took 30s and chrome 2s.

i also tried some of the sites in the presentaion and sure enough IE8 lags. sometimes only by a fraction, sometimes noticeably. you can't make me believe that my internet connection and caching is causing many seconds delay.

the truth is chrome and FF perform better without internal caching and their JS engines perform better. IE8 eventially catches up but only after it caches web pages.

this is my view from my usage of IE8 in any case.

but ie8 definately performs a ton better than IE7. not enough to win me back sadly.
