Hey I attempted to install the beta last night, and once it reached the final step, migrating files and user profiles, it froze at 63%, and didn't move from there.  I just shut down my computer and everything was back to normal.  Do you have any idea what went wrong?  Should I just try it again?  I did a upgrade to a 32 bit windows 7 beta, from my 32 bit windows vista home premium.

willingbeta, unfortunately there isn't enough information given for us to offer any guidance as to what went wrong. However, we have some forums set up on TechNet where you can discuss your issue with other Beta testers who might be able to help you with your issue:

My VB6 application is working best in this version of Windows but not in Vista. Thanks! I'm not recompiling again!

willigbeta the release notes for 7 indicate some problems when doing upgrades.

Furthermore since it's only a beta I would recommend against upgrading to it, since it's a non-reversible process (unless you make a full disk image backup prior to the upgrade), and Microsoft recommends against it anyway.

The best way to experience the beta IMO is to have a partition set aside or a dedicated machine to test it on, with a full install (not upgrade).  A VM is also acceptable because of the ease with which you can create and destroy them without them affecting the host machine but you won't get glass (though IIRC if your host OS is vista/7 with aero glass you can remote desktop in and you'll see glass on the guest OS).

Well my Windows 7 Experience score is a 1.0, down from the 2.0 I scored with Vista.  Unfortunately my graphics card is the weekest link so to speak, other than that my system scores on average around a 4.0.

Windows 7, seems to run pretty good, although theres no more aero, I cant actually say I miss it all that much, Windows 7 in its basic view is actually rather pretty, and runs well.

    newscientist2000,

It sounds to me like you have a pretty old computer. Most retailers refuse to sell Vista computers with a score less than 3.0 so either you were conned when you bought it or you're running vista and windows 7 on a old computer with old hardware that wimply isn't up to scratch. When vista was released microsoft themselves stated that if the computer was no more than two years old then you should be ok but any more than that then it would be unlikely to run properly.

I recommend that you get a new graphics card. A score of 2.0 on vista is bad enough but 1.0 on windows 7 is just plain stupid. Anyways my base score is 3.5 and that was determined my graphics for windows aero but my gaming graphisc scored 4.9,both my processor and ram scored 5.5 and my primary hard disk score is 5.8.

I installed Windows 7. It doesn't like my video card. It is  nvidia GeForce 5200 with 256 Mb memory. Windows freezes even after I updated everything. So I took it out, runs good now. Will I have to buy another video card with more memory????? Will we get a new license key in Sept. to keep this????

    Also my score is 3.1

    Hi Lee25,

Yeah, my desktop computer running Windows 7 beta is very limited!  Truth is I'm far to cheap to upgrade this 6 year old desktop, its far to reliable, Intel CPU, Intel motherboard, NVIDIA GeForce FX5500 graphics card.

I'ld like to run Windows 7 on my wifes more powerfull Windows XP MCE Laptop..but that is off limits if you know what I mean!

The main problem with my desktop is actually the motherboard because it limits AGP to 4XAGP operation, Intel didnt want to push any specs on the motherboard when they made it, slow bus speed, slow graphics, but hence it has been very reliable, nothing was stretched to the limits in its design!  My graphics card is even limited by the motherboard!

However the computer is still running after 6 years, and the motherboard was a refurb, so I can't fault it!

Still I'm actually very impressed with Windows 7 Beta's performance even on my very limited test hardware.  Which is surely a good thing for Bussiness adoption of Windows 7 going forward.  Windows 7 not only can perform well on the high end machines but also low end machines!

Who knows maybe I can convince my wife to upgrade to Windows 7, or maybe I will buy a new laptop for myself with Windows 7 when it comes out.  My desktop PC is 6 years old, about time for a hardware upgrade.
