Download the Windows Live Essentials Beta Refresh

Today, we’ve released a refresh of the Windows Live Essentials Betas. You can download the updated suite at download.live.com. The Windows Live Essentials consist of Messenger, Mail, Photo Gallery, Movie Maker, Writer, Toolbar, and Family Safety.

We want to make sure we iron out all the kinks before removing the “beta” tags ;-)

Earlier this month, we rolled out the new Windows Live web services.

Also, the original apps were available in native 64-bit versions. How many years do you have to wait (it's been 2 years already since Vista 64-bit was released and 3 years since XP 64-bit was released) to get native 64-bit versions ot Windows Live? Live Family Safety doesn't even work on 64-bit because of the software driver dependency.

Good to see a beta refresh before the actual release. Especially considering the number of bugs that there were! (which now seem to be fixed! (Y) )

Is it just me though, or have we lost the ability to set each conversation window/sign-in notification of a contact to a custom colour??? (yes, funny aussie spelling of colour - get over it americans :P )

All I can seem to do is set it to use the "default scene" colour. It would be really helpful if this came back, because it allows us to identify who we are talking to quickly and at a glance see who has signed in.

    ie. work mates = green

       buddies = blue

special someone = red ... know what I mean?

    Thanks,

By the time I get used to these versions, Wave 4 will ribbonize these like you already did to Movie Maker. I just wished UI changes weren't done so frequently. What does it take to add real useful features (compared to a few thrown around in these "new versions") instead of UI redesigns?

Hahaha, anonymuos. It's good to read that you are concerned enough for Windows Live that you have taken the time to post you comments. Thank you.

I'm liking how WIndows Live is turning into a great suite of apps. The UI is also maturing nicely. I've been having problems with Live Photo and Windows 7, where I'm unable to see and change photos after maximizing the photo preview window.  But that is in the previous version. I have yet to download and test the refresh.

    Keep up the great work.

Tested it today. Overall they are resource hungry. Messenger  used 20Mb+ more memory than previous.

    Upside: Amazing interface.

The installer is more then ok... Everything has been done without problems or errors and the programs are working properly... BUT

What is happening with WL Movie Maker? Few features...

Windows Live Photo Gallery will preserve image metadata (copyright, keywords, exif) for images published to SkyDrive and Flickr, while Windows Live Writer will strip all image metadata and thus create orphan works. WLW is broken in this respect, and should be fixed to behave the same way as WLPG
