Demo: Live Icons in Windows Vista

In the last video, Esther told you all about how Instant Search makes her day-to-day life easier. Today, she's going to talk to you about Live Icons, which makes searching even faster by letting you see a preview of the files you're searching for. If you're a visual person you'll especially appreciate seeing icons instead of file names or folders, and not having to open each file individually, which saves a ton of time.

How do you get the preview pane to stay on so that I don't have to go organize > layout > preview pane everytime I want to use it?

    Thanks for sharing this feature.

Brandon, many of my friends thought "Live Icons" is something to do with "Windows Live" (inlcuding me) :(

Would be nice if we can rephrase it to more suit the Windows Desktop Search

chakkaradeep, Esther called this feature Live Icons in the video and unfortunately I can't change the video. I don't want to add confusion by changing the title and mentions of "Live Icons" in the post and have it not sync up with the video. I apologize for the confusion.

Keep in mind - when we talk about anything Windows Live here on the blog it will be called "Windows Live" and never simply "Live" anything.

    Thanks,

    Brandon

Live icons have never worked for me.  It works for images and movies.  But word documents, spreadsheets, text files etc stay as icons.  Even when I change the view to "Extra Large Icons".

Vista has been reinstalled a few times in the last year.  Under folder options, "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is unticked.

I had actually come to assume that Live Icons was a dropped feature when I couldn't figure out how to turn it on.

Wow such an earth-shattering feature, now only if Explorer saved/retained all settings including the View set for each folder, this would be of some use.

jc3k for Office documents to word as icons you need to be sure to save a thumbnail when you save the document. For Office 2007 this is found right in the save box while other versions of office should have it under save options or something similar.

    StophVista:

Thanks for that.  I had never noticed that option before.

Not that I had looked for it in Word.  I assumed that it was Vista that would create the thumbnail, not the parent program.  So I'm guessing text files are out of the mix then?

Thanks for clearing that up for me.
