Put Windows Live on your Windows Mobile phone

Windows Live for Windows Mobile is now available to download for your Windows Mobile phone. Windows Live for Windows Mobile lets Windows Mobile users sync their email from Windows Live Hotmail as well as their Windows Live Contacts.

To download, just head on over to this URL on your Windows Mobile phone:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/mobile/wl/download-en-us.mspx

UPDATE: Folks wanting a shorter URL to access Windows Live for Windows Mobile can go to the following URL - http://wl.windowsmobile.com/

Just download the .cab file for the version of Windows Mobile you are running (Standard or Professional). Windows Live for Windows Mobile works on phones running both Windows Mobile and Windows Mobile 6 (and 6.1).

Let me explain how I use Windows Live for Windows Mobile today on my BlackJack II. Because Windows Live for Windows Mobile syncs up my Windows Live Contacts - I encourage many of my contacts to edit their profiles and make sure their email addresses and phone numbers are correct. When their Windows Live Contact is synced to my phone - their name appears under my Contacts on my Windows Mobile phone (Windows Mobile has a centralized "contact directory"). Information my Windows Live Contacts fill out in their profiles appear on my phone. Users can have multiple phone numbers entered into their profiles for a variety of locations such as Mobile, Home, or Work. When I choose to call a Windows Live Contact - I choose any of the numbers they provided to me that is in their profile. Of course I can also edit their contact information either in Windows Live Messenger, Windows Live Mail or via the web in Windows Live Hotmail.

Speaking of Windows Live Hotmail - Windows Live for Windows Mobile also lets my sync my email to my Windows Mobile phone as well. With Push-Email - you can get your email from Windows Live Hotmail account as it comes in.  The sync features for email in Windows Live for Windows Mobile let me view the same unread/read email messages on my Windows Mobile phone, desktop PC with Windows Live Mail, or via the web with Windows Live Hotmail. If I read an unread message on my phone, it not only becomes unread on my phone but also becomes unread in Windows Live Mail and on the web in Windows Live Hotmail.

Windows Live for Windows Mobile however does not come with a Windows Live Messenger client for your Windows Mobile phone.  We've chosen to do this to support carrier's plans for IM services for their phones. If there is no IM client on your phone, you can try our browser based version of Windows Live Messenger to chat with friends or ask your carrier about IM options for your phone.

For me - Windows Live for Windows Mobile has become a huge asset for me in staying connected with Windows Live and is essential for my Windows Mobile device.

Why isn't the Windows Messenger client included with this download?  My work mobile (an HP iPaq 510 on at&t) came with this application so I know that it's out there.  My personal Mobile (a Samsung SCH-i760), on the other hand, will be left as a second class citizen and be forced to use the inferior browser based client.

We all know that "asking our carrier for wireless IM options" will result in either an additional $5.99 a month charge or the option to buy a new phone altogether.

I have been a Windows Mobile user for 6 years over 5 phones and have been a proponent of the platform the entire time.  Microsoft has the unique position to marry their mobile platform with applications and services, but they seem to hand the reins over to corporations that are more interested in nickel and diming us than actually providing valuable services.  It's happening with Media Center and Cable card and the DRM debacle, it’s happening with the mobile phone operators and I’m sure we’ll see it crop up elsewhere.

Maybe the release of an iPhone SDK, or the Android platform will allow end users to use their devices as they see fit.  In the mean time, I will continue to use Windows Mobile but my faith is constantly being tested.

michael.saul, I'm sorry by not including a Windows Live Messenger client is making you think about switching away from Windows Mobile entirely. Thanks for your feedback and I've relayed it appropriately...

    Thanks,

    Brandon

    michael.saul (and others):

There are third party clients for Windows Mobile that can connect to all the major chat networks/protocols so you can get the functionality easily, even if your carrier would prefer that you not know it existed (and would prefer that you believe that your Windows Mobile phone and its network is a walled garden, when it isn't really).

These clients, of course, use your unlimited data plan, not "text messages" nor anything else the carrier can meter you for.

I use Windows Mobile for the platform, but then use Opera instead of IE Mobile, FlexMail and Pocket Informant instead of Outlook Mobile, and a large number of other third-party applications.

iPhone is not a competitive platform at the moment for power users of applications (despite being better at some things). Third-party applications cannot run in the background, so on the iPhone, you really can't provide your own IM app or push email app if Apple doesn't!

    Hi all,

Has anyone installed this thing on the HTC Kaiser, otherwise known as the AT&T Tilt, Vodafone v1615, HTC TyTN II (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTC_TyTN_II)?

I have the Vodafone flavour of it. twice I've installed WL for Windows Mobile and twice its required me to do a hard reset of the device. I daredn't install it again.

If anyone has any stories to share I would appreciate it.

    JeffT:

Good points.  I suppose I'm just used to the Live client and actually find it suits my needs very well.

The decision to let mobile operators tell Microsoft what features to implement still doesn't sit well with me.

Thankfully, we aren't stuck with a walled garden anymore - remember when smartphones required signed applications to install?

I have never tried Opera (or any of the other apps you mentioned) I'll certainly have to start looking at them.  Like I said, I'll continue to use my 2 Windows Mobile phones (though I'm still looking into consolidating those) because they have the right mix of features for me.

I am in the same boat as jamiet.  I upgraded Windows Live on my HTC Touch and it was working fine after the reset, until I decided to soft reset my phone again.  I could not get past the Windows Mobile screen with the green background.  I had no idea what it was at the time so I had to hard reset my Touch and re-install all my recent apps. Same thing again...

The only thing I installed new that day was my Windows live update.  After yet another hard reset, I only installed the Windows Live update with no email account set up and all was okay with subsequent reboots.  I then set up my Hotmail account and, as expected, I had to hard reset again.  I won't be installing it again any time soon until another update rolls around.

    Hey deniz,

I'm glad its not just me. Which model of phone do you have?

I got in touch with http://support.live.com and they told me to go and contact my phone provider. I'm glad this has happened to someone else cos I can go back and say "err no, its YOUR fault".

    P.S. I blogged about this problem: http://jamiethomson.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!550F681DAD532637!4726.entry

    Hey Jamie,

MY Phone is the HTC Touch MP6900 (CDMA), which I believe is known as the HTC Vogue in Europe.  I also got a reply from support.live.com and was told to ensure there was enough free memory on my device storage.  I would imagine there will be many others with this issue!

jamiet and deniz,I am shooting your comments over to the Windows Live for Windows Mobile folks. I'll try to investigate why this might have happened to you guys. I'll post my findings when I get some here.
