Looking for the Logo: Update on Certified for Windows Vista

I caught up with Deryl McCartney, Marketing Manager for the Windows Vista Logo Program, to get a general update on Certified for Windows Vista products as of today.

Just to re-cap: Certified for Windows Vista products are products that carry the above logo. This logo represents a group of applications and hardware that have gone through an extensive certification process that means they work great with Windows Vista. We want users who are looking for devices, applications, or PC components to easily be able to identify the ones that will give them the best experience in Windows Vista today. When I go into a store looking for something for my PCs I always "look for the logo".

As of April, we currently have over 5,000 products that are Certified for Windows Vista. Since last July, the amount of Certified for Windows Vista products has almost doubled!  As you can see - we've seen quite a bit of growth with new Certified for Windows Vista products entering the market.

Deryl is very excited about some of the new Certified for Windows Vista products hitting the market today and wanted me to share a few with you:

He also tells me that there is a special section off http://www.windowsvista.com/ designed to showcase all the great Certified for Windows Vista products (right-hand side) worth checking out.

And there is even a Sidebar Gadget for you to add to your Windows Vista desktop that keeps you up-to-date with all the Certified for Windows Vista products and lets you search for specific products to see whether they are certified or not. Download the Gadget here.

I've covered my experiences with several Certified for Windows Vista devices here on the Windows Experience Blog recently:

I expect to be talking about some hot new Certified with Windows Vista devices in the very near future. And of course I expect to get regular updates from Deryl too!

And stay tuned as I have something else planned in regards to Certified for Windows Vista I think you'll like as well.

eponymousnyc: Good ol' "Vista Capable", right? Quite the fiasco when that came out in court.

I hope the Creative x-fi XtremMusic, and all other models of the series based on the same card gets "FAILS to run under Vista" logo.

A simple visit to Creative Forum and you will see it packed with super long threat of having the X-Fi failing to run properly on any hardware configuration based on new motherboard chipset from Intel, Nforce 4 and above, SLI, Crossfire. And the Vista drivers 32 and 64-bit keeps crashing or freezing.

    - Open skype, do a a conversation, close skype -> good luck playing music.

Anyway, an abysmal product that doesn't even deserve a Windows certified logo what's so ever.

So what exactly does the logo mean, the basic end user assumption is that if you see the 4 red green blue yellow Windows symbols and then underneath if it says XP or Vista that that software or hardware will work optimally on every incarnation of that OS, be it 32bit or 64bit, Basic or Ultimate.

That assumption may be wrong, but since Nintendo put the quality seals on there NES carts a generation of NERDs have assumed that Seal Logo = just works!

Do all these certified devices have drivers that work with both 32bit and 64bit editions of Windows?

I can't take it anymore, so I'm wiping my drive and going back to XP.  Can't wait for my $2000 pc to act like a pc again.  See you in Windows 7 (maybe).

eponymousnyc, I'm sorry to hear that. I would like to hear more about your issues if you have time. Feel free to send me a Private Message:

Also: I am not sure your PC has the same exact logo as shown above. I'm not familiar with entire PCs being "Certified for Windows Vista" however PCs do ship with white "Windows Vista" logos on them (I will post a picture of the logo running on my laptop later) to showcase they come with Windows Vista.

Good_Bytes, I am sending your feedback directly to Deryl and his team. Thanks for the comment.

newscientist2000, will post a few answers to your questions shortly.

    Thanks,

    Brandon

I wish I could share in the joy and marvel at the over 5000 products that are Vista Certified. However, it is meaningless when a Vista update BREAKS the previously Vista Certified device. Come on, let's not put frosting on a turd.

I waited and waited and finally, SP1 is here but I can't have it. So I waited and waited for the Sigma Tel fix. I don't see it happening. So I bought a new drive and installed XP Pro and can't believe how much faster and cleaner it is. Even the picture and sound quality is better than Vista. Where was the improvement??????? Feels good to be home again.

jquimby, what Certified for Windows Vista device "breaks" for which Windows Vista "update"? When you come here and say "lets not put frosting on a turd" it would be appreciated that you add a little more context to your issue.

I'd like to remind folks to try and be constructive when leaving comments here. Simply calling something a "turd" isn't very constructive.

And we have provided a update to the IDT/SigmaTel blocker for Windows Vista SP1 here:

    Thanks,

    Brandon

    * The specification are subject to change without notice. Or something similar will be on every hardware specification page or their manual.    Also with the millions of combination of hardware       no one including Microsoft can anticipate everything.
