Taking a Closer Look at the Origami Experience 2.0

In the next couple weeks, I'll be doing a 4 part series on the Origami Experience 2.0 which was announced at CES this year. The Origami Experience software is a "pack" of applications designed specifically for the Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC) running Windows Vista.

The Origami Experience 2.0 software comes with 3 applications that do specific tasks on the UMPC. I'll give a quick overview of these applications in which I'll go into greater detail in my 4 part series of posts about the Origami Experience 2.0.

Origami Central:

Origami Central provides quick access to your Media Library on your UMPC. That means your music, photos and videos. Origami Central lets you play your music, watch your videos and watch photo slideshows. On top of letting you access your media, it also gives you quick access to favorite programs on your UMPC like Microsoft Office OneNote 2007. In the Origami Experience 2.0 - Origami Central comes with a brand new browsing experience. You can now browse the web using Origami Central is full-fidelity web browsing - 100% compatible with IE7. That means you can browse sites that use Flash and other ActiveX controls. It also comes with a RSS feed reader also new to this release.

Origami Now:

Origami Now is a brand new application for the UMPC with the release of Origami Experience 2.0. It is designed to bring you information useful to you very quickly without much interaction. It does this by giving you the ability to customize "tiles". You can navigate between these tiles and their information. What kind of information can be in the tiles? You can configure tiles for weather, email, RSS and more.

Origami Picture Password:
You can use Origami Picture Password to login to your UMPC.

I'm using the Samsung Q1 Ultra UMPC to run the Origami Experience 2.0 on (exact model number and specs here). It works wonderfully for me.

So I've broken up my 4 part series on the Origami Experience 2.0 software into the following parts:

Origami Experience2.0 Part 1: Web Browsing
Origami Experience 2.0 Part 2: RSS
Origami Experience 2.0 Part 3: Media
Origami Experience 2.0 Part 4: Origami Now

Expect part 1 soon!

kumar8abhay, we are responding to comments as much as we can. This blog isn't really the proper way to get technical support regarding Windows Vista SP1 issues. I recommend visiting our Windows Vista SP1 FAQ which gives you information as to how to get support and resolution to your SP1 troubles:

wisher, I do not believe this runs on the EEE PC sorry.

iand, I am hoping to have info on availability in the near future.

    Thanks,

    Brandon

It *shouldn't* run on an EEE PC because an EEE PC isn't a UMPC -- it's not a tablet; it generally doesn't run XP Tablet or Vista (thought it can). It doesn't make any sense that it *would* run on an EEE...

My question for Brandon is: Will this be available as a download for anyone running a UMPC? As 'iand' said, there are those of us that already have UMPCs that would love to get our hands on it. The Origami Project Forums (where links in Origami Experience points to) have been waiting for some kind of word on this since January, but Microsoft hasn't released any information.

I was able to play with the 'leaked' version a bit, and, though it was mainly in Italian, I was incredibly impressed with it. I'm REALLY looking forward to the day I can get the legitimate, english download.

    Hey Brandom,

I wonder if this version is limited for UMPCs. I just got an HP TX2120us, it is a tablet PC with 12.1" screen. I think Origami 2.0 would be a great software for this tablet.

And i would like to know how the install recognized if certain computers are UMPCs or not?

is it for the screen resolution? is it for the passive digitizer screen?

I want to second the opinion that this would be a great application for the Tablet PC form factor, in addition to the UMPC.

Especially, those of us who are using touch screen tablets in slate mode, the Origami Experience would be a great way to interface with my most common applications.

    jclopez and kenlefeb,

The Origami Experience software is designed to run on UMPCs only - unfortunately it will not work for Tablet PCs. The apps in the Origami Experience are designed to run at resolutions on the UMPC such as 1024x600. I am not sure how the installer determines if the system is a UMPC or not - it may be the screen resolution. You can most certainly try to install it on a Tablet PC but its most likely not going to work or work correctly. You can try installing the first version of the Origami Experience software here as the new version I am talking about here has not yet been released:

    Hey people!

Don't you agree that the origami experience could be a great app for the new tablets with pasive digitizers? or for the tablets that have both pasive and active digitizers?

New ones that include the touch screen besides the pen experience are probably a new breed of laptops (ok, ok, probably I am overreacting on this). I think that this new touch screen experience tablets can take advantage of the Origami Experience in the same way that UMPCs do or probably better.

The opportunity to be able to work with OE in 12.1" touch tablets, can promote and spread the word of the benefits of digitizers (in this case pasive, but I think active too).

What do you think? Do you think Microsoft can work on this and promote this technology on tablets like HP TX2000z series preparing the field for the future? Personally I believe that the future includes touch experience in several big form factor devices. for instance MS surface technology is one of the big form factors. Why not on a 12.1" screen?
