The Date for General Availability (GA) of Windows 7 is…

This is one of those posts where I’m truly excited to be writing. I get to tell you when Windows 7 will be on store shelves! According to input from customers and partners we’ve made a lot of progress with Windows 7.

Our milestone-to-milestone approach for Windows 7 is built on a great deal of feedback from customers and testers. This has been pivotal to the development of Windows 7.

I blogged a few weeks ago that it’s looking like we’ll have Windows 7 ready in time for the holidays.

Since then we’ve made enough progress to feel really good about announcing today that Windows 7 will be in stores beginning October 22nd.

I don’t know about you but I can’t wait to see Windows 7 sitting on store shelves!

Some people may not be able to wait for Windows 7 to arrive before having to order a new PC (like parents who are sending their sons or daughters off to school who need of a PC to take with them). Fortunately, there is no need to wait. Soon, customers will be able to take advantage of the Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program. This program enables participating retailers and OEMs to offer a special deal to upgrade to Windows 7 for customers purchasing a qualifying PC. I’ll be doing another blog post about this program with a date and more details when we get closer to availability.

Obviously, Release To Manufacturing (RTM) is an important milestone on the path to GA. We anticipate that we’ll be able to make the RTM code for Windows 7 available to our partners sometime in the 2nd half of July. We also expect to be able to make RTM code for Windows Server 2008 R2 available to our partners in this time frame as well.

So, it is 8 days later...the rumor is the Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program will become available on June 26th.  True?

What are the other details, like will it be a free upgrade from Vista that is purchased with a computer that is shipped after the program start date, or will there be a fee to upgrade?

    Hallo Brandon,

I just bought a new HP Pavilion Notebook with Windows Vista Home Premium 64Bits.

Will HP also use the Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program for my new Pavilion notebook?

    greetings from Maastricht, The Netherlands

If Microsoft can push the General Availability Date forward consider the fact that Windows 7 is already near perfect. Apple going to launch their new OS in September. Given the fact that Windows Vista was not as successful as we thought, release Windows 7 before Mac OS X Snow Leopard would be beneficial for Microsoft. Also, Microsoft should seriously re-considering their pricing policy. Give more affordable price range, would bump Windows 7 sale dramatically. Apple let their Leopard user upgrade to Snow Leopard just $29. I guess Microsoft should do similar thing as Apple, they should let all Vista user upgrade to Windows  7 in a low price range (like $50)....

ok.. that's nice to hear. but am having a laptop ,just bought , come with Vista(home premium) and am having only recovery CDs and not the driver CDs(Toshiba satellite 300). so i can upgrade to windows 7 or i have to stick with vista itself ? Am fedup with vista as it is very slow. Also i want to know whether i can upgrade to 7 freely or i have to purchase aagain and again...?!

Can't wait!  Love using the RC.  I have to agree ... lose the physical media and let us download it!

I have to say that the sooner the better.

I am currently running Windows 7 RC (Build7100) on a 2005 model IBM 8183-KMT upgraded to 2GB RAM, 160GB IDE HDD and 256 NvidiaGraphics.

I have been running it for the last five or so weeks together with an early torrent of Office 2010 TP.

I have had no problems whatsoever with either software, and am able to run many of my earlier XP type programmes as well.

I will certainly not be returning to XP anytime soon,; being able to jump Vista is a bonus.

Bring it on sooner rather than later - Windows 7 Ultimate is the bees knees.

Congratulations Microsoft, now, just give us a version of Accounting professional that allows for local base currency and Australian VAT and you will be perfect.
