The Date for General Availability (GA) of Windows 7 is…

This is one of those posts where I’m truly excited to be writing. I get to tell you when Windows 7 will be on store shelves! According to input from customers and partners we’ve made a lot of progress with Windows 7.

Our milestone-to-milestone approach for Windows 7 is built on a great deal of feedback from customers and testers. This has been pivotal to the development of Windows 7.

I blogged a few weeks ago that it’s looking like we’ll have Windows 7 ready in time for the holidays.

Since then we’ve made enough progress to feel really good about announcing today that Windows 7 will be in stores beginning October 22nd.

I don’t know about you but I can’t wait to see Windows 7 sitting on store shelves!

Some people may not be able to wait for Windows 7 to arrive before having to order a new PC (like parents who are sending their sons or daughters off to school who need of a PC to take with them). Fortunately, there is no need to wait. Soon, customers will be able to take advantage of the Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program. This program enables participating retailers and OEMs to offer a special deal to upgrade to Windows 7 for customers purchasing a qualifying PC. I’ll be doing another blog post about this program with a date and more details when we get closer to availability.

Obviously, Release To Manufacturing (RTM) is an important milestone on the path to GA. We anticipate that we’ll be able to make the RTM code for Windows 7 available to our partners sometime in the 2nd half of July. We also expect to be able to make RTM code for Windows Server 2008 R2 available to our partners in this time frame as well.

I like WIndows 7, and I would be using the Release Client, but the experience I had with the Beta Client, ie. having to format the drive to install either the RC or another OS (Vista in my case) and looking forward to the mandated shutdown every two hours... was less than exciting to me. Especially since I was led to believe the same thing would be required of the RC (at least the format)... I will probably buy it when it comes out, but It would be easier if they would have offered an upgrade special for testers up front... I would be using Windows 7RC right now and not missing the features I tasted in the Beta...

If upgrading won't require a format, I might still consider using the RC...

    Hi thewo0kie,

You could always partition your drive before you install Windows 7 RC one partition for the OS and one partition for your data files.

That way when you eventually upgrade to Windows 7 RTM you can overwrite the OS partition so long as you have been saving your important files to the data partition.

There was even a work around for going straight from Beta to RC, it just isnt recommended.

Formatting, prior to installing an OS is always best, and that will probably be the case in RTM too, however for me its a very small inconvenience on a partitioned  system for a great RC version of Windows 7.

Great news, am loving Windows 7. Have noticed people asking about downloading Win 7. Reason I bring this up, I, like a lot of people have 4 computers. Two desktops a netbook and a notebook, running Vista on one and Xp on the other 3. All the O's are retail except one, the netbook which came with the computer. They are all wirelessly networked to a router.

When Win 7 comes out, I would like to run all the computers on Win 7. One on 64 bit one on 32 bit and the notebooks maybe a lighter version 32 bit.

I dont want to walk into a retail store and have to buy all these systems separately. I just wonder if Microsoft could have a liscence for people like me with multiple computers and O's, so that for a certain price we could update all our computers, with different Versions of Win 7.

This would probably have to be done by downloading and verifying serial no's etc.

    Could this be a possibility.

I think the Upgrade Option is a great thing.  I purchased Vista earlier this year as I just couldn't wait any longer, will folks that purchased Vista on its own be eligible for the upgrade too?

How much will the Windows 7 Upgrade Option cost?

  8. Posted on: June 07, 2009 at 9:08AM

Question of the Day. For all of us that went from Windows Vista Home Premium to the Windows 7 RC which in turn gave us the Windows 7 Ultimate Upgrade, what will this cost us, when 7 hits the shelves in October? And for all of us that are Technet or MSDN subscribers will we, get a discount on the final release?

Why October 22nd -- a Thursday? Any significance to being 6 days before WHG3's 54th birthday?
