The Date for General Availability (GA) of Windows 7 is…

This is one of those posts where I’m truly excited to be writing. I get to tell you when Windows 7 will be on store shelves! According to input from customers and partners we’ve made a lot of progress with Windows 7.

Our milestone-to-milestone approach for Windows 7 is built on a great deal of feedback from customers and testers. This has been pivotal to the development of Windows 7.

I blogged a few weeks ago that it’s looking like we’ll have Windows 7 ready in time for the holidays.

Since then we’ve made enough progress to feel really good about announcing today that Windows 7 will be in stores beginning October 22nd.

I don’t know about you but I can’t wait to see Windows 7 sitting on store shelves!

Some people may not be able to wait for Windows 7 to arrive before having to order a new PC (like parents who are sending their sons or daughters off to school who need of a PC to take with them). Fortunately, there is no need to wait. Soon, customers will be able to take advantage of the Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program. This program enables participating retailers and OEMs to offer a special deal to upgrade to Windows 7 for customers purchasing a qualifying PC. I’ll be doing another blog post about this program with a date and more details when we get closer to availability.

Obviously, Release To Manufacturing (RTM) is an important milestone on the path to GA. We anticipate that we’ll be able to make the RTM code for Windows 7 available to our partners sometime in the 2nd half of July. We also expect to be able to make RTM code for Windows Server 2008 R2 available to our partners in this time frame as well.

I have used Windows 7 beta and Windows 7 RC.

There has been quite a change in the login screen's background. The Media Player dosent have the Visualisations. the RC is quite slower than Vista SP1

Any plans on offering discounts to current Vista users upgrading? I bought Vista Ultimate when it was released and I have to admit that I do not feel good about haveing to pay a premium price to upgrade from a OS that wasn't bad, but not good either, IMHO. Especially since all the the hype about the promised great "extras" (that med me go for the ultimate version) basically was nothing more than a hype. Again, IMHO ;)

As rumors go around... will technet subscribers get to see a RC2 before all of this?

Brandon, this is great news....a pat on the back to you and all the folks that made this possible

Although I like the idea of downloading and ISO, I like the idead of having a truly archival quality disc rather than writable disc media.  Don't forget too that there is marketing built into a retail box.  It makes Windows 7's arrival much more visual when you can go into a Best Buy and see it sitting on a shelf.  It reaches out to those who may not be aware that Windows 7 is even coming.

Good job guys!  I'm enjoying using the RC.

A big thumbs up for Win 7, just wondering if Microsoft will finally recognize the service that beta tester etc have provided all these years, would Microsoft be where it is today without us.

It would be a appreciated gesture if current registered RC testers are "thanked" with a full version of Win 7 "free gratis"

This news is great for new PC buyers but what about all of us who have supported Vista now and in the past? Is MS going to offer any kind of upgrade "deals" for us? While many have bashed Vista there are those of us who have stood behind it. I hope MS takes this into consideration and offers upgrades from Vista to Windows 7 at a reasonable price.

PLEASE make both Windows 7 & Server 2008 R2 available to MSDN & Technet subscribers immeadiately after they RTM (or within a week)!!!!   I know I'm itching to get my hands on them for testing.  Sure others are as well.

PLEASE make both Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 available for MSDN & Technet subscribers to download immediately (or within a week) of RTM!!!!!  I'm sure there are a huge number of us that want to get started testing asap.

Does that mean that Windows 7 will be available for MSDN subscribers in the second half of July as well?
