The Date for General Availability (GA) of Windows 7 is…

This is one of those posts where I’m truly excited to be writing. I get to tell you when Windows 7 will be on store shelves! According to input from customers and partners we’ve made a lot of progress with Windows 7.

Our milestone-to-milestone approach for Windows 7 is built on a great deal of feedback from customers and testers. This has been pivotal to the development of Windows 7.

I blogged a few weeks ago that it’s looking like we’ll have Windows 7 ready in time for the holidays.

Since then we’ve made enough progress to feel really good about announcing today that Windows 7 will be in stores beginning October 22nd.

I don’t know about you but I can’t wait to see Windows 7 sitting on store shelves!

Some people may not be able to wait for Windows 7 to arrive before having to order a new PC (like parents who are sending their sons or daughters off to school who need of a PC to take with them). Fortunately, there is no need to wait. Soon, customers will be able to take advantage of the Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program. This program enables participating retailers and OEMs to offer a special deal to upgrade to Windows 7 for customers purchasing a qualifying PC. I’ll be doing another blog post about this program with a date and more details when we get closer to availability.

Obviously, Release To Manufacturing (RTM) is an important milestone on the path to GA. We anticipate that we’ll be able to make the RTM code for Windows 7 available to our partners sometime in the 2nd half of July. We also expect to be able to make RTM code for Windows Server 2008 R2 available to our partners in this time frame as well.

    Pricing yet?

Do the OEMs really need three months (late July to late Oct?!) to prepare?  You'll be missing the all-important back-to-school season this way!

iGAT, we've not yet announced pricing for Windows 7.

Amazing windows has come to understand the real needs of people.  My sister is going off to college and is getting a new computer.  I do not want her going off with windows vista, especially when windows 7 is so close to release.  Looking forward to the next update!!!

Encouraging consumers to download the iso and burn it themselves is a BAD idea for something as important as an OS install disc. A significant number will mess up the burn process and generate needless support calls because they're trying to install from a faulty disc. Look at the number of people who messed up the beta install because they'd used a cheap disc then multiply that by 10 for the general public.

Dare I say I am excited (except for starter edition...) despite the fact that Vista 64 has treated me well.

  7. Posted on: June 02, 2009 at 10:40PM

So will we have a Microsoft Event to Launch Windows 7 like we did for Vista?  Really hoping you will still have one in sunny Orlando, FL!

Hmm, the great Windows XP RTMed in August I remember and after that was the unfortunate 9/11 and the general availability date was pushed to Oct. 24. 8 years and still going with 60%+ marketshare. Wonder why?

Definately great news, gives me something to look forward to, over the next few months it will be great to see PC makers like Toshiba, HP, Dell, Sony, IBM, Acer, Gateway spoil us by releasing previews of their latest gen machines running Windows 7.  Hopefully you will get to show us some of those new machines on this blog.

It cant wait for some firm details of the "Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program".

Will the program be expanded to include a Windows 7 upgrade option for Netbooks running XP ?... because the usual Windows Upgrade Programs usually only apply to a computer running the last version of Windows... and well, Netbooks are really a whole new category of PC.  That said there may be no need to include Netbooks in the upgrade program, as many netbooks would be hard to upgrade due to the lack of a DVD drive on many Netbooks!

Congrats Brandon and everyone else who has made it possible to keep Windows 7 ahead of schedule, aswell as ahead of the curve.

It sure will be great to see new Tablet PCs, Notebooks and Netbooks running Windows 7.  I am excited as a IT Technician getting free juice and Muffins at a Microsoft Launch Event!

You can tell your team they've done a great job with 7 so far! I'll be looking forward to the retail releases when ready.
