Windows 7 on Track to Hit This Holiday Season

There has been quite a bit of speculation and chatter around the timing of milestones for Windows 7. Of course folks want to know when Windows 7 will become available in stores and on new PCs. We’re in a good position today to provide an update to the timing of when we expect for that to happen. I’m really excited to be able to give this update – particularly given what it takes to deliver a high quality OS to millions of partners, customers, developers and the entire ecosystem.

Our approach to the development of Windows 7, as we’ve highlighted in the past, has been tied to people like you around the world contributing in real-time by testing our key Windows 7 milestones - from the Pre-Beta we handed out to PDC attendees last year, to the Windows 7 Beta, and now the Windows 7 RC which we recently released for everyone to try. Steven Sinofsky outlined this milestone-to-milestone approach in this blog post back in January. And today, Steven highlights the path to our next milestone for Windows 7 – RTM, or release to manufacturing. RTM is the final stage for the engineering of Windows 7.

If the telemetry we receive from the Windows 7 RC meets our expectations in terms of quality, then we expect to hit RTM in 3 months or so. Again, check out Steven’s blog post on this process. If this happens, it looks like we’ll be able to have Windows 7 done in time for the holidays. I want to underscore that our top priority remains QUALITY. This guidance does not alter that principle.

Bill Veghte shared this news today at TechEd North America 2009 taking place in Los Angeles right now. Here is what he said in today’s press release:

Microsoft is committed to ensuring that IT professionals and developers continue to have the platform and technologies to drive maximum value and business results. Getting the most out of IT investments is even more important in today’s economy.

He also adds:

With early RC testing and extensive partner feedback we’ve received, Windows 7 is tracking well for holiday availability.

Thank you for being great partners and customers, providing the kind of feedback required for us to be able to give this type of guidance. And honestly, I can’t say thank you enough!

The telemetry and testing continue, and we encourage IT Professionals and enthusiasts to try the Windows 7 RC out at home and at work if you’re not doing so already. Share it with your friends who may also want to take it for a test drive. I currently am running the Windows 7 RC on every PC I own – at home and in the office. I am also recommending my friends and even family members try it too. And everyone I’ve recommended try it and has done so has been impressed!

So there are two things you should go and do today if you haven’t already: go get the Windows 7 RC and… watch Star Trek because the movie is amazing. Since I’m running the Windows 7 RC on all my PCs (yes, every single one), I think I’ll have to go see Star Trek again.

    Hi Brandon,

All I can say is drivers, drivers, drivers. There just aren't enough. Attempted to insert newer drivers(not compatible). This could be a problem.

To be truthful the BETA Release was much better than the RC1 Release. More putty like, now I am working with a hard clay.

I can however say that everything about WINDOWS 7 looks great compared with Vista. The feel and interface are GREAT in Windows 7.

Drivers, and building a solid image is a concern however.

Only time will tell how it stacks up against XP. If all goes well?

    Back to Vista!

I’d anticipated Windows 7 RC with relish, looking forward to improved speed, slick interface, new features.  All went well with the upgrade to my laptop (HP DV6680, Core Duo T7250, 4GB), everything worked, even Skype and the HP Quickplay buttons which the check said might not work.  The new interface was indeed slick.

But speedier?  No.  Start-up and restoration times after hibernate?  No perceived improvement.  Sleep mode however seemed more incisive.  A couple of glitches – odd blackouts and restarts, some problems with Google Chrome unable to find pages where IE8 had no problem, something I’ve not seen under Vista.

But the crunch came yesterday when I got a load error with the reassuring message that Windows will resolve the problem (corrupt Registry).  But then – “Windows is unable to resolve the problem”.  Restore system from last know good image? – same result; Shut Down, or Restart!  Restart produced the same.  Safe mode – no difference.  Then tried loading and repairing from the Win 7 DVD – this time got options to recover from any of 9 system restore points.  Looked promising!  But — alongside an option to choose the restore partition (just the one option, C), a message stating that the disk needed System Protection set.  The option button wasn’t selectable.  No way forward.

So after all the hassle of installing Win 7, and the anticipation, I now had two possible courses of action: (1) re-install Win 7 from scratch and rebuild or (2) re-install Vista.  I chose the latter – once bitten etc.  I’m now back on Vista as was thanks to HP factory restore and the excellent Acronis True Image.

Quirks I can forgive in an RC, but the lack of perceived performance improvement was disappointing.  Failure to recover from System Restore points is inexcusable – surely this is fundamental during beta or RC?

I also discovered through trial and error that (1) you can’t upgrade from 32-bit Vista to 64-bit Win7; and (2) if you create a dual-boot system, the new partition has to be a fresh build (i.e. loses all settings from the previous installation). Both pretty obvious I suppose, but not (as far as I could see) clearly stated in the instructions.

I've got several BIG bug to report, but I just do not know where to put. So I posted this...

    Following is the bug:

I have Windows 7 RC (Build 7100) x86 in Simpified Chinese on my Lenovo Yangtian M8000 (Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300/2GB RAM/500GB HDD/AMD ATI Raedon HD 2600). I experienced some difficulties processing my video with After Effects CS4 by Adobe - After Effects kept reporting overflows converting ratio denominators, and stops me from doing any processing. This is a school work that I had to hand out! I got SERIOUSLY straitened and have a GUILTY CONSCIENCE to all my teammates as the work can not be handed in in time.

And, when I tried to rip my favourite DVD (Not locked!) into my computer, the software I used, Super DVD ripper, works oddly - it gives wrong audio  - too quiet, and the second rip even hace uncountinous, quiet audio. I had to gain it. I have Audition (Adobe product again...)but poor Audition can not handle such a  video file. So I used Windows Media Encoder to peel audio out off the video. But I get an odd WMA file. Even after I forced to boost the audio, when I rebuild a video with Windows Media Encoder, I get an odd file again, with a super-low picture quality. Poor me - just can not do such an easy work with such famailar tools! I even considered roll back to Windows 7 Pre-RC (Build 7057) which DO NOT contain those issues, or even a personalized Windows Server 2003 SP2 (Not R2)

Would you like to find out the issue, and fix this problem, in at least a update patch?

Hope to hear from you soon. My E-Mail address: xcvista#sina.com.cn (The # should be a @), accept only in English or Chinese(Simpified and Traditional are both OK)

I would like to see feature added that allows user to customize the appearance the "rectangles" of the minimized programs in the taskbar-- namely, choose what color they are.  My job requires me having a slew of windows open and navigate from one to the other speedily.  It would be a lot easier to be able to find the program on the taskbar instantly by assigning it a unique color.

Will there a public RC for windows 7 enterprise?

This is the best news since XP!!!!!!!!  I have only played with 7 for a couple of days, and I LOVE IT!  I just hope the price is in an affordable range, I have four ( oh shoot now 3, one became a Mac (daughter got rid of her vista machine!)  I loaded 7 on a machine which Vista absolutly refused to go on!  7 is working and seems quite happy!  And fast, look out Mac Seven is coming!  Yes every one should see Star Trek, they should have put Seven of Nine in it! (har har)

Actually one major difference I noticed between Windows 7 Beta and RC was that the desktop backgrounds had changed in RC, at least for me.

Infact from the moment I started Windows 7 RC, I noticed the new pretty blue opening screen, then the themes are different I now have a US Theme, and there are new Theme backgrounds the Architecture desktop backgrounds were my favourites.

Reminds me of an old article on the Vista Blog were the work of Hamad Darwish was highlighted for the great pictures he took for Windows Vista.

Anyway, I liked the backgrounds in Windows 7 Beta and Windows 7 RC, and hope the final release to market (RTM) will have the best of both available.  I do really like the return to Themes in Windows 7, it reminds me of the Windows 98SE good old days... infact I just went back to the good old days on Windows 7...

    on10.net/.../Go-Retro-Get-Windows-98-Themes-for-Windows-7

Love the old Windows 98 Jungle Theme, but I dont miss the sound scheme!

Anyway I really like all the new bakgrounds, themes and background shufffle and peak at desktop features in Windows 7.  I also like the fact that a lot of Global Themes can be downloaded.

The user tiles have also changed, it would be nice it new user tiles could be downloaded from a Microsoft website to, for the truely lazy among us who cant shrink a picture.

Anyway great job on the artwork all around :-)
