Windows 7 on Track to Hit This Holiday Season

There has been quite a bit of speculation and chatter around the timing of milestones for Windows 7. Of course folks want to know when Windows 7 will become available in stores and on new PCs. We’re in a good position today to provide an update to the timing of when we expect for that to happen. I’m really excited to be able to give this update – particularly given what it takes to deliver a high quality OS to millions of partners, customers, developers and the entire ecosystem.

Our approach to the development of Windows 7, as we’ve highlighted in the past, has been tied to people like you around the world contributing in real-time by testing our key Windows 7 milestones - from the Pre-Beta we handed out to PDC attendees last year, to the Windows 7 Beta, and now the Windows 7 RC which we recently released for everyone to try. Steven Sinofsky outlined this milestone-to-milestone approach in this blog post back in January. And today, Steven highlights the path to our next milestone for Windows 7 – RTM, or release to manufacturing. RTM is the final stage for the engineering of Windows 7.

If the telemetry we receive from the Windows 7 RC meets our expectations in terms of quality, then we expect to hit RTM in 3 months or so. Again, check out Steven’s blog post on this process. If this happens, it looks like we’ll be able to have Windows 7 done in time for the holidays. I want to underscore that our top priority remains QUALITY. This guidance does not alter that principle.

Bill Veghte shared this news today at TechEd North America 2009 taking place in Los Angeles right now. Here is what he said in today’s press release:

Microsoft is committed to ensuring that IT professionals and developers continue to have the platform and technologies to drive maximum value and business results. Getting the most out of IT investments is even more important in today’s economy.

He also adds:

With early RC testing and extensive partner feedback we’ve received, Windows 7 is tracking well for holiday availability.

Thank you for being great partners and customers, providing the kind of feedback required for us to be able to give this type of guidance. And honestly, I can’t say thank you enough!

The telemetry and testing continue, and we encourage IT Professionals and enthusiasts to try the Windows 7 RC out at home and at work if you’re not doing so already. Share it with your friends who may also want to take it for a test drive. I currently am running the Windows 7 RC on every PC I own – at home and in the office. I am also recommending my friends and even family members try it too. And everyone I’ve recommended try it and has done so has been impressed!

So there are two things you should go and do today if you haven’t already: go get the Windows 7 RC and… watch Star Trek because the movie is amazing. Since I’m running the Windows 7 RC on all my PCs (yes, every single one), I think I’ll have to go see Star Trek again.

Where can I ask questions like, will GPT partitions be supported to install Windows 7?

I myself love WIndows XP Pro; it's stable, user friendly, fairly lite (compared to Vista Ultimate), and I tell all my friends and customers to rather get XP than Vista.  But (and I mean BUT)  I might have to change my taste in O.S.  From what I see so far Win 7 is promising.  While there still is security prompt issues, it's more user friendly than Vista, the interface is easier to use, it's faster (to me). And with the ability to incorperate Windows XP into 7....WOW  HOW CAN YOU SAY NO THAT!

One thing I really like is how Microsoft allows end users to try Windows 7 and send their feedback to Microsoft <--  To me thats VERY important.

Hi I have installed Windows 7 RC1 on two computers an Acer Aspire 5620 and an Acer Aspire one and they both work well apart from getting used to the different eviroment it and needing a new driver for the mose on the aspire one.

The only thing I dont like is that there is no side bar in the new version.

Looking forward to the relase of the full version.

Wow things are moving along fast, Windows 7 should be here in next to no time.

Based on the Beta and RC it should live up to expectations, and prompt a lot of people to upgrade or buy a new PC.

I also watched the new Star Trek movie over the weekend with my buddies and it is simply amazing, great effects, great casting, loved Zachary Quinto as Spock.  I second that the new movie is definitely worth watching, it was simply great on the local IMAX, I felt a little sorry for the people in the front row of my local cinema as the sound was loud, and there was a lot of action!

I had a feeling that Microsoft felt that they were close. Of course being at the RC stage of development pretty much says it.

The Open Windows 7 Beta was already an amazing release; beyond what I expected after Vista. I've only been running the RC for a little over a week, but so far everything has been smooth. I like some of the minor updates to menus, the installation options explained a lot better and went smooth, the little extras here and there are nice to run across. I look forward to the RTM and then the public release (which I anticipate will follow Vista and release early 2010). I'll be sure to be picking up a copy or a new computer with 7 installed soon after it's released.

Thanks for letting more of the public in on the early releases. I think it gives customers a good look at what is coming up and it gives Microsoft real, real-world data to monitor and analyze.

Windows 7 isn't really that HUGE step forward that I thought it would be, but it turned out a lot better than I hoped. Some compatibility issues drive me nuts, but that's expected with Anti-virus and firewall software (although it sucks to have to purchase new licenses). I think 7 is really going to help Microsoft wipe of the mud left by Vista and move forward towards a customer base that is happy to own Windows PC's.

That is awesome! I can't wait until the final release version comes out. I am to running it on all of my computers. I have not had a single one of them crash, freeze, or anything like that. Windows 7 is a fast, stable, and a fun OS to use. Keep up the good work and I can't wait to see what other features you guys build into the final release! Now is your time to stick it to Apple's Mac!
