Test Updates Coming for the Windows 7 RC

Starting this Tuesday (May 12th) we will release up to ten test updates to PCs running the Windows 7 RC in order to verify our ability to deliver and manage updating of Windows 7 in certain real-life scenarios. These updates do not deliver any new features or fixes. This is the second set of test updates we’ve released to test the updating mechanism for Windows 7 - the first set were released on February 24. For more information, see this post on the Microsoft Update Blog.

Brandon, has anyone else reported the problem of mapping to network printer queues using Windows 7 (build 7100)?

I reported this to my MS TAM, and he said he saw the same thing.

Let me know if anyone else has reported this, and if there's a fix for this.

I have Windows 7 up and running. It seems to be working well. The only problem I had so far was with the recommended antivirus programs. McAfee won't download. Trend Micro stopped responding and running. I kept getting the Security error message that there is no antivirus program installed. Now I am using AVG, but it is finding low treats in cookies but won't remove them. Any suggestions? Thanks.

guys, hi, I've just installed W7 RC1 on an IBM T61 and wanted to test  the biometrics finger print reader funtion.  Although the driver is loaded and there are no errors, every time you test the  biometric reader I get the following erorr "No finger Print device loaded" - I've checked the Device manager and there are no device errors - I've un-installed the drivers - is there somthing i doing wrong

Scrolling does not behave like like it does in Vista 64bit Home Premium. In Win 7 Beta & 7 RC.  MS Wireless Laser Mouse 5000 (with appropriate drivers and settings) is sluggish and unresponsive for the half turn or so unless I scroll up first and then start to scroll down! How bizzare...

Is anyone having any internet connection issues with Virtual XP?

I tend to have slow connection issues when connecting into the net.  Now I'm just not connecting at all.

One issue I came to is adding memory to Virtual XP.

I currently have 8G of ram on my computer, while VXP will only allow 3G I put a bit over 1G.  When starting up VXP i got the BSOD.  After reducing the ram to 920MHz I haven't had any issues.

If XP allows 3G, why could it have crashed when I just put 1G ram?

I have one suggestion for you guys. Could there be a way for mouse gestures to be used in place of touch gestures? This would be nice for people who don't have the money or access to a multi touch or touch screen monitor.

So far I am enjoying every thing that Windows 7 has to offer. I like the idea of being able to click on a window and shaking it to minimize other windows. I have only had it for about 4 or 5 days. I am extremely impressed with how fast it boots, shutsdown, and opens other programs. At first I thought that I was going to have problems with the Release Candidate, but I am enjoying it! Keep up on the improvements and this will be the best operating system that Microsoft has ever released! I can't wait for the final version!

    hi everybody,

Unfortunately I've installed windows 7 RC 1 yesterday. I couldn't find my intel GMA 900 drivers in windows installation. I've tried to update via windows update but drivers wasn't available through update also. Why microsoft is not giving support of intel GMA 900?

    hi brandon,

can you flash some more light on this issue ?

Hi guys, you have a great update. I've been testing the RC for quite some time. Good job guys! You guys wanted feed back on the upgrading. So, can I suggest that you ask the users during the compatibility check to uninstall any firewall? I've encountered BSOD (1st time in Windows 7) when using some VPN software and running programs from it. The software is garena and running left4dead from it. it causes an IRQ in tcpip.sys. I uninstalled my firewall (Comodo Firewall) which solves the issue (after checking the dump, logs, etc). The TCPIP stack has changed too significantly that some firewalls may not handle them properly (for example, hamachi as well) for upgrading from Vista. I have to uninstall the drivers (delete  the driver as well as the installer's reinstall cannot it). I guess it is best to remove/uninstall the network drivers to prevent hiccups. I suppose the network drivers, esp monitoring and security programs do not have full support for Windows 7 at the moment and it will be best to remove them before upgrading!

Lastly, some notes on upgrading! I don't have enough disk space after 1hr++  of checking Compatibilty check from Vista to Windows 7. It would be best for the Compatibility to do a simple recheck on the harddisk instead of rechecking the whole OS again (took another hr or so).

Just a suggestion (don't mind me), would be best to ask user to add a thumbdrive or extra hard disk for swap as windows 7 requires only 7GB for clean install. I mean, we are upgrading from Vista, in real world, right? so our harddisk space is some what limited (erm, we have installed and accumulated our programs/software over these years, that's why we are upgrading!). I guess this is a minor complaint for upgrading and a good to have things. =)
