Test Updates for Windows 7 Beta Users

Starting February 24, we will be releasing up to 5 test updates to PCs running the Windows 7 Beta (Build 7000) via Windows Update. These updates allow us to test and verify our ability to deliver and manage the updating of Windows 7. We typically verify servicing scenarios during a beta.

Windows 7 Beta users will be notified that new updates are available beginning February 24 through Windows Update. Even if the user has Windows Update configured for automatic update – these test updates will not install automatically. Users will need to manually install the test updates through Windows Update.

These updates do not deliver new features or bug fixes. The test updates simply replace system files with the same version of the file currently on the system.

For more information, please visit the Microsoft Update blog.

Again, thank you for helping test Windows 7. Your feedback is extremely valuable!

Test Updates didn't work on my computer on my 32 bit install - I figure it was down to the Beta drivers I had loaded for my Intel chipset (intel_inf_9101013beta) as when re-booting the boot process just died, and I couldn't even boot up from a Vista Recovery Disk. When I ran diagnostics I received an error message  stating my hard drive was corrupted/damaged.

Ended up booting from a 64 bit disk (it took 1 hour to get through the start of the re-load process!) before I had a workable laptop again

And has it dimmed my experience of Win 7 Beta?

Not a bit! Even as a beta, this is the OS Vista should have been

Currently running the Windows 7 Beta on a GX270 Workstation and cannot change the display settings from 640 x 480.  If i do try and adjust it to anything higher, the resolution appearance is very poor.  Based on other site feedback, tried running XP and Vista x32 Chipset and Display Driver updates with no success.  Anyone else run into the same issue or have ideas for a resolution?

    TwoShoes,

You could try updating your BIOS, then check your BIOS settings are correct e.g. set to onboard vs AGP or PCI graphics.

If you do have an external graphics card make sure its seated correctly.

Usually its the chipset and graphics card driver problem, but it could be a hardware or BIOS problem.

If you did an upgrade install try a clean install after backing up your files.

    @TwoShoes,

Are you using the Windows or a manufacturer driver?

When I installed the ATI-specific driver for my video card I could only run 800X600 and even the recommended 1024X768 wouldn't work correctly. I got a lot of screen tearing and discoloration when trying to use other resolutions. Most resolutions would just show me a blue screen until the confirmation timer ran out and reverted back to 800X600.

After going back to the Windows driver, everything worked correctly. In this case, I blame the preview ATI driver for my problems.

Congratulations to Microsoft for paying heed to the P.C. Market......Having reviewed Vista--I was pretty much preparing to migrate my systems here to Apple/Leopard. My issues were..

    a) compatibility with legacy software ( even M.S. versions)

    b) Compatibility with existing hardware

    c) Bulkiness of OS in terms of Memory---both RAM and HD

    d) Quantity and Instability of DLL paths

f ) Operational Overhead of Graphics systems....

    g) Loadup and boot times....

I am glad to see Windows 7 appears to have addressed most of the issues above. It appears to boot quickly, has a flexible UI, and with most developers and hardware suppliers now becoming firmly on-board in Vista Type OS drivers, improved hardware and software compatibility.  It is less bulky in terms of software and uses computer resources a lot more.  effeciently. It is also considerable more stable with a more friendly user experience ( much fewer "are you sure" 's ). Though I haven't tested it fully as yet...I am pleased to see the new software allowing me to dive into Computer management cfunctions and compenents a lot more easily....

I am pleased I will be able to Skip the "Vista" OS cycle entirely with my systems here and migrate directly from XP to Windows 7 come the formal Introduction Of the new OS....which I hope will be soon
