Test Updates for Windows 7 Beta Users

Starting February 24, we will be releasing up to 5 test updates to PCs running the Windows 7 Beta (Build 7000) via Windows Update. These updates allow us to test and verify our ability to deliver and manage the updating of Windows 7. We typically verify servicing scenarios during a beta.

Windows 7 Beta users will be notified that new updates are available beginning February 24 through Windows Update. Even if the user has Windows Update configured for automatic update – these test updates will not install automatically. Users will need to manually install the test updates through Windows Update.

These updates do not deliver new features or bug fixes. The test updates simply replace system files with the same version of the file currently on the system.

For more information, please visit the Microsoft Update blog.

Again, thank you for helping test Windows 7. Your feedback is extremely valuable!

I agree that that there should be unlimited growth available for customizing Windows the way the user wants it. However, a lot of people who complain about the new UI are just stubborn. They are used to how things were and are afraid to move forward to something different.

Vista and Win7 are still very similar to XP, but are obvious successors. My wife refused to switch to Vista until she was forced to when her laptop gave out on her and I bought her a new one. Sure, I could have put XP back on the new machine and comforted her, but I asked her to just give Vista a try. My only worry was that there would be a lack of software support for the OS and that would turn her off.

Well, it's been about a month and she is now happy with Vista and even compliments some of it's features that make things quicker and easier than XP.

In my line of work I have also met people who just cannot wrap their heads around new UI's. People who may be used to working with FAT clients have a hard time moving to THIN clients, but they quickly realize the benefits of shared resources. People just need to take the time to look at what is right in their face.

I still have problems with Vista. Mostly due to software not working and the amount of hardware resources used to run the thing. I'm hoping Service Pack 2 will bring Vista up to speed. (BTW - how's that coming along Microsoft?)

Win7 has been an amazing experience. It still has the compatibility issues and I'm sure a lot of those won't be corrected even at lauch, but that's about the only complaint I have for things I don't expect to be fixed by launch.

Win7 fixes a lot of the problems Vista has and adds some great features. My favorite feature of Win7 is that it works well, even with older PCs. I am running Win7 on an HP Pavilion 5020us, which has 1GB DDR RAM, AMD Turion64 Process, and 128MB ATI Radeon x200 mobile integrated GPU. Where Vista sucked the life out of that thing, Win7 runs wonderfully with little hickups. Most lag is a result of the 5400RPM HDD, not the OS.

Of course, I am using the "Send Feedback" button and reporting anything that I have a problem with. I hope that someone at Microsoft has time to read these things. I try to keep them short, but we all know that it's nice to have as much detail in a report as possible to find the cause of the problem.

For those that want to go back to XP... Give Win7 a try when it is released. Try it for 6 weeks if you use the computer all the time or 6 months if you are a casual computer person. I think that you will find that a little change is worth it for a better experience. We still use XP SP3 at work and we won't be going to 7 until at least 1 year after release (if not longer). I can say that I miss a few of the features of Win7 and Vista when at work. There are definitely some features that would help me be more efficient when working. All Win7 needs is a desktop switcher. For XP I like to use an amazing thing called VirtuaWin. Desktop switching is something Windows has been missing that many people would love to have and Linux veterans can't live without.

    Peace...

Well I installed some updates for my machine, according to my Update History 2 of those were marked as test updates:

Test Update for Windows 7 Beta (KB967540)

Test Update for Windows 7 Beta (KB967355)

The updates installed fine, Windows 7 was running great before the updates and is still running great.

I installed the test updates. Everything went great. Worked great before and still does. The only problem I had with Windows 7 is it could not find my Nvidia onboard network. I went out and bought an Intel. Everything works great now. I have been running Windows 7 on a different tray hard drive since the first day of downloads. I tryed all kinds of trial software and free stuff I could find. I can't make it hiccup.

Vista I did the same it hiccuped maybe twice. Once I had to do a fresh install. Windows 7 rocks. Keep up the good work.

I've installed the test updates also, along with all the other updates available, and 7 is running as smoothly as ever.

Great job with the PR and Windows experience, and keep up with the great job!

can anybody tell me when'll I get updates for my GMA 900 ?

  6. Posted on: February 26, 2009 at 10:52AM

    Disabling screen dim function.

My Samsung NC-10 notebook screens dims every minute while I'm doing a video conference on Live Messenger, I had to keep touching the touchpad.. (All power settings including high-performance).

I think earlier there was a control to set the brightness/dimming options in the power settings panel, but it seems to be removed. I like it back.

I haven't tried but I heard screen also dims while watching movies, etc due to inactivity.

The updates as desired by the windows team are failing to install.

The windows update notification keeps propping up, have tried three times since last night.

    -----------

    Suggestion:

Add customize every icon size by user.

    size range: 8x8 ~ 256x256

Of course, this will not influence original function.

It is very practical. You can customize your desktop commonly-used icon size.

It can let the desktop be easier to work.

    look screenshot:

What I'd like to see is a view mode (in addition to the current icons, tiles, details, list etc) that would dynamically resize each icon based on its popularity (ie. number of times clicked). This basic idea is the same as a tag cloud:

    en.wikipedia.org/.../Tag_cloud

The Start Menu already tracks your most recently used shortcuts (apparently incorporating the popularity of the program as well, to some extent), so extending that feature to be systemwide shouldn't be too difficult.

This has myriad uses. You could use it in Windows Explorer, making documents you open most often larger and thus easier to target. You could use it on the desktop, making your most popular shortcuts larger. It could be incorporated into other programs, like Media Player and Media Center (resize album art based on number of times played), as well as 3rd party products.

I restarted my computer yesterday and the updates completed installation. When the computer rebooted, I located the Test updates in Windows Update History. It was a flawless test for my machine.

On another note: Allow users to choose where the "Show Desktop" icon sits on the taskbar. In both Vista & XP the icon is on the left. I would prefer it sit to the left of the Start Menu Icon. I've actually just switched to using Win + Space to show the desktop instead because that button seems so far away now. -- Don't worry, I've submitted this concern through "Send Feedback"

I love the new Show Desktop icon in Windows 7, I like that it allows you to Preview the Desktop if desired, and that it can't be moved and deleted like the previous Show Desktop in older versions of Windows.

However I second that I would like the ability to move it to the left or some other place on the taskbar.
