Enabling Multi-Touch in the Windows 7 Beta

Now that the Windows 7 Beta has been out for a while, I’d like to highlight how folks can try out Windows Touch, Windows 7’s new multi-touch capabilities.

In order to take advantage of it, you are going to need a PC that supports multiple touch points. Today – there are a few PCs on the market to choose from:

To enable multi-touch capabilities on these PCs running the Windows 7 Beta you will need to make sure you have the latest multi-touch beta drivers. The driver allows the digitizer screen to support multiple touch points. Remember these are beta drivers, they still need to pass through our rigorous Windows Logo process before they are final, we can’t guarantee that all pre-Windows 7 PCs will have logoed drivers.

  • For HP TouchSmart All-in-One PCs: The driver is available from Windows Update. After you have installed the Window 7 Beta, open Windows Update from the Start menu. You might have to click the “Check for Updates” link on your left so it will find the driver, it is Optional right now so you’ll have to select it before it will install.
  • For the Dell Latitude XT and HP TouchSmart tx2 Tablet PCs: the drivers are available now on N-Trig’s website. N-Trig is the company that makes the digitizer in these PCs (you should read the release notes, there are some limitations, like no pen support you should be aware of and how to switch between Windows Vista and Windows 7). Please also note these are beta drivers and are not supported by Dell or HP.

Many features in Windows 7, which are available today in the Windows 7 Beta, take advantage of multi-touch capabilities and I thought I’d highlight a few with some tips here.

To make sure multi-touch is working try our new Paint. The latest version of Paint has some cool new brushes that are designed for multi-touch, click on the Brushes gallery and pick any one (I like the Oil Brush). Now try finger painting – this is also the easy way to see how many fingers your PC supports at the same time, some support two at a time, others support 4 or more.

paint_touch

Once you are done “painting” - try out Internet Explorer 8. The big touch feature here is panning; you can place your finger anywhere on a page and drag up or down to scroll the page – that’s a lot easier than trying to touch the scrollbar. You can also go back and forward between pages with your finger using Flicks: try flicking to your right (as if you were going back in a book) to go back.

You can also use touch to navigate along the taskbar. The new Jump Lists on the taskbar are touch optimized, instead of right-clicking on one of the icons on the taskbar, trying dragging up on it with your finger to literally pull the menu up.

Windows Media Center is also touch optimized. Ben Reed, Senior Product Manager for Windows Media Center, demoed this for Channel 10.

One last tip: To make buttons and controls bigger and easier to touch, you can tell Windows to display everything larger – this has really improved in Windows 7. Go to the Start menu and type display, and then open the Display Control Panel (which should be at the top of the Start menu). Choose the Medium (that’s what I use) or Larger size and you will find that everything is easier to target with your finger.

    Suggestion:

In Windows Explorer's toolbar, 'Text Button' very very crowded.

If you use the Netbook, it only has 9-inch display...very low Screen Resolution.

The 'Text Button' very very crowded...

Please attach great importance to Netbook (low Screen Resolution)...Netbooks Hit the Mainstream in 2010!

    1) 'Text Button' is very stupid design. please use 'Icon Button' to replace it.

    2) Please making a toggle function, to select Text Button or Icon Button by user.

    3) And add customize commonly-used buttons function for toolbar. like WinXP or OSX, customize buttons by user.

    4) Or, real-time show text when press 'Icon Button'...

fachueh, thanks for the feedback! I suggest you submit that feedback from the Windows 7 Beta through the Feedback Tool included in the Windows 7 Beta. You will see Feedback links at the top of application windows or a link to the Feedback Tool on your desktop.

    Hi,

I get few second ago mail - "Exploring Windows: Special Beta Edition" with information that I can take part in Windows Feedback Program. I send e-mail few seconds after getting that but I get replay that program is now closed. Few seconds and 500 people registered? I don't think so. Please do something with that. I want to take part in that program.

    Regards,

@ddluk i received the same email on 11/02/09 i responded then and havent heard back, no reply telling me its closed no reply telling me im unsuccessful and no reply telling me i was successful, given the fact theres 5 days between me receiving the email and you getting it, it is possible that the 500 places are taken. Bearing in mind the sheer number of people who have downloaded the Beta, i was worried that it being 6 hours between the email appearing and me replying would prevent me from from being included.

I just recently heard about Windows 7 and I'm excited!  I'm looking at buying a new laptop for school because mine broke, and I'm going to get Vista Home Premium (64-bit) and I hope that when 7 is released I'll be able to upgrade!  This might be a stupid question...but if I buy a laptop that doesn't have touch screen, can I buy a separate monitor that has touch screen and enable it on the laptop?  Just curious...the laptop I'm looking at now doesn't have touch screen.  I'm hoping that these touch screen monitors will be more popular once 7 is released!

  7. Posted on: February 16, 2009 at 6:21PM

@Mel i suspect that if you buy a touch enabled monitor then while the monitor is connected to the laptop and you use that as your mainscreen you will have touch, but as soon as you disconnect the monitor you will go back to not having touchscreen capability. However to be totally honest, you would be better off trying to get a laptop that has touch already built in.

@ sanginius that is what i thought about the monitor.  i am looking for a laptop with touch built in already but the only HP i am able to find at a quick glance has a smaller screen and hard drive than the one i am looking at, but ill keep looking :)

What is the truth in this from all over Slashdot...if true this is not good.

    ---------------------------------------------------

"A few days' testing of Windows 7 has already disclosed some draconian DRM, some of it unrelated to media files. A legitimate copy of Photoshop CS4 stopped functioning after we clobbered a nagging registration screen by replacing a DLL with a hacked version. With regard to media files, the days of capturing an audio program on your PC seem to be over (if the program originated on that PC). The inputs of your sound card are severely degraded in software if the card is also playing an audio program (tested here with Grooveshark). This may be the tip of the iceberg. Being in bed with the RIAA is bad enough, but locking your own files away from you is a tactic so outrageous it may kill the OS for many persons. Many users will not want to experiment with a second sound card or computer just to record from online sources, or boot up under a Linux that supports ntfs-3g just to control their files." Read on for more details of this user's findings.

Re — Photoshop: That Photoshop stopped functioning after we messed with one of its nag DLLs was not so much a surprise, but what was a surprise: Noting that Win7 allows programs like Photoshop to insert themselves stealthily into your firewall exception list. Further, that the OS allows large software vendors to penetrate your machine. Even further, that that permission is responsible for disabling of a program based on a modified DLL. And then finding that the OS even after reboot has locked you out of your own Local Settings folder; has denied you permission to move or delete the modified DLL; and refuses to allow the replacement of the Local Settings folder after it is unlocked with Unlocker to move it to the Desktop for examination (where it also denies you entry to your own folder). Setting permissions to 'allow everyone' was disabled!

Re — media: Under XP you could select 'Stereo Mix' or similar under audio recording inputs and nicely capture any program then playing. No longer.

Looks like I am late for the party since the W7 beta testing has ended.

Last week I tried to down load a copy several times but it kept crashing on me....

Actually it just fizzled out. I start it, then go do something else, then come back to see it just sitting there not doing anything.

Oh well, guess I'll have to buy a copy when it comes out

I have heard alot of great things about 7. I am looking forward to it.

    Rob
