General availability for the Windows 7 Beta to end

First off: thank you for your interest in beta testing Windows 7! As we near January 24th, we wanted to update everyone again on the next steps for the Windows 7 Beta. The amount of feedback we have received has been amazing and continues to pour in. We are at a point where we have more than enough beta testers and feedback coming in to meet our engineering needs, so we are beginning to plan the end of general availability for Windows 7 Beta.

Because enthusiasm continues to be so high for the Windows 7 Beta and we don’t want anyone to miss out we will keep the Beta downloads open through February 10th. Customers who have started but not completed the download process  will be able to do so through February 12th.

The shutdown of general availability for the Windows 7 Beta will occur in 3 phases over the course of the next few weeks:

  • Starting January 27th, the Windows 7 page will be updated with a warning that time is running out on downloading the Windows 7 Beta and that we will be limiting downloads shortly. People will be encouraged to register and start the download of the Windows 7 Beta sooner rather than later.
  • February 10th, new downloads of the Windows 7 Beta will no longer be available. People who have already started their Windows 7 Beta download and have not yet finished will still be able to finish their download and are encouraged to do so.
  • February 12th, people will no longer be able to complete their download of the Windows 7 Beta. Anyone who hasn’t finished downloading the Windows 7 Beta will be unable to do so.

Product keys for the Windows 7 Beta will continue to be available. So if you have the Windows 7 Beta but didn’t get a product key you will be able to do so even after February 12th.

MSDN and TechNet Subscribers will continue to have access to the Windows 7 Beta bits throughout the Windows 7 Beta phase. The above dates do not apply to MSDN and TechNet Subscribers.

dhaval, this blog here is your #1 source for Windows-related news and announcements including Windows 7. We'll post major Windows 7 announcements here. If you want a behind-the-scenes look at the engineering work done on Windows 7, you should check out the Engineering Windows 7 Blog here:

Of course, I'd assume that the Windows 7 ISO's will continue to be available as a torrent file.  Any "beta tester candidate" surely knows about torrents.

Or will the files available on the torrent circuit be locked somehow?

There are lots of interesting, nice new features in Windows 7, I noticed that Internet Explorer now shows its history from the taskbar when right clicked.

Unfortunately Word 2003 doesn't have the same functionality, i.e. it doesn't show its recently used file list with a right click from the taskbar. Would it do this for Office 2007? (is anyone running 2007 and Windows 7) because its a shame to see that missing from Word 2003.

Hey I just noticed that when I copy a FILE, it no longer

    Copy of FILE

    but

    FILE - Copy

Pure Geneius, now how do I edit the registry in XP and Vista to behave the same way.  Because that is a feature I cant live without.

Now if there was a way that you could make Explorer treat shortcuts to files as if they were files, and shortcuts to fodlers and folders when autoarranging the items by type that would make me very happy.

Not of course the default setting but maybe something for TweakUI for Window7.  The option could be "Sort Shortcuts as if original file"?

    Just a thought!

I think lots of people would love to see a performance comparison against Vista SP1. It would be nice to see what improvements Microsoft is trying to make on that side of things, and how they are turning in to actual numbers.

Also, I believe I read somewhere that the Win 7 beta expires in August, for everyone - can someone confirm this, just so we have everything all switched back to our other OS installs?

Is there a way to update Vista systems (no sp) to Windows 7?

My 3 machines are not compatible with SP 1 due to hardware conflicts.  But, they are are running Vista very well.

I did a`complete install the 7 operating system on my Toshiba Satellite A105 works great except for a few small issues. "Feels" much better.

Please don't make me reinstall everything on the other two...
