General availability for the Windows 7 Beta to end

First off: thank you for your interest in beta testing Windows 7! As we near January 24th, we wanted to update everyone again on the next steps for the Windows 7 Beta. The amount of feedback we have received has been amazing and continues to pour in. We are at a point where we have more than enough beta testers and feedback coming in to meet our engineering needs, so we are beginning to plan the end of general availability for Windows 7 Beta.

Because enthusiasm continues to be so high for the Windows 7 Beta and we don’t want anyone to miss out we will keep the Beta downloads open through February 10th. Customers who have started but not completed the download process  will be able to do so through February 12th.

The shutdown of general availability for the Windows 7 Beta will occur in 3 phases over the course of the next few weeks:

  • Starting January 27th, the Windows 7 page will be updated with a warning that time is running out on downloading the Windows 7 Beta and that we will be limiting downloads shortly. People will be encouraged to register and start the download of the Windows 7 Beta sooner rather than later.
  • February 10th, new downloads of the Windows 7 Beta will no longer be available. People who have already started their Windows 7 Beta download and have not yet finished will still be able to finish their download and are encouraged to do so.
  • February 12th, people will no longer be able to complete their download of the Windows 7 Beta. Anyone who hasn’t finished downloading the Windows 7 Beta will be unable to do so.

Product keys for the Windows 7 Beta will continue to be available. So if you have the Windows 7 Beta but didn’t get a product key you will be able to do so even after February 12th.

MSDN and TechNet Subscribers will continue to have access to the Windows 7 Beta bits throughout the Windows 7 Beta phase. The above dates do not apply to MSDN and TechNet Subscribers.

Has anyone ever considered haveing the option of joining your laptop to more than one domain?

Just imagine how nice it would be to logon at work to your work domain and then bring your laptop home and logon to your home domain

Presently we have the ability to have different hardware profiles so depending on which profile we choose it changes the hardware options presented to the logged on user

What cant we do the same for the domain.

At bootup be presented with a domain profile screen where we can choose which domain we need to be members of.

The domain information is stored in the registry. Why can the registry be branched into HKLM, HKDomain1, HKdomain2 and in this way when we select the domain profile at bootup we can then just load that section of the hive and get the chance to be a member of 2 or more domains and.

Technically i believe it is possable as it is all software and we can make software do what we want it to do

Well the new's of the beta being unavailable to more downloads is expected. As far as some of the question's go here though. It's not a case of them stopping us testing/using Windows 7, it's they are stopping anymore "new" installs appearing (although you will still get the code's).

As for the OS well what can i say.. So far I'm finding it actually enjoyable, more than i have with any previous version I've tested (from around 2000 onwards). The guy's at MS seem to be actually changing the approach a little in 7 and listening more than they have in the past. This is really nice to see!

I like having many different versions.  Not only is MS required to do this (I think that's what I heard) I don't want a bunch of extra stuff that someone who is running a business might need.  I don't need it, so I wouldn't get the business version.  I had Vista basic and that was plenty.

I have been using the x64 version of Windows 7 since January 11th and fair play the installation went smoothly and i have been enjoying testing Windows 7 ever since. It's hard to believe that this only beta 1, as to me it's been 90% more reliable than the x64 version of vista that came with my HP dv 9702 ea laptop!!!

@ Brandon LeBlanc .... A personal "thank you" for all you're help and Answers here in this blog - you're an asset to Redmond and hope speed to God that you're always recognized and appreciated by you're colleagues there at Microsoft and they give you the just deservedly respect that you have given us here, and furthermore you seem just as excited as us and have our enthusiasm in road testing Windows 7!!

Keep up the good work and hope Windows 7 will be the best o/s to come out of Redmond, come RTM !!!!!

Windows 7 rocks and it's awesome Bar is Awsome, such a refreshing and cool looking Bar!!!

I allways used XP and kinda skipped vista, but now that windows 7 beta is out I'm even joining beta blogs ;) .

It has a real refreshing look and feel, smoother and faster then both vista and XP, still it seems a lot more advanced.

I will be testing every piece of hardware i have installed in my room to be sure to provide MS more information to complete a full release.

Thanks Brandon to keep us up to date about the beta release.

I downloaded Windows 7 few weeks ago, and so far its been a wonderful experience. Thank you very much.

but I need a help from someone...

My original OS was (or it still is) Windows Vista. so to install windows 7, I created a new partition in the HD. so I end up with the partition for Vista , the partition for Windows 7, and the partition for the backup.

My request for help is if someone can tell me how can I eliminate the partition where the Vista OS is, to end up only with windows 7 in my HD.

or in general, how can a partition be eliminate?

    Thanks

    Quarrtz,

I how to do the same thing.  I used Gparted partition editor liveCD boot.  This is the website: gparted.sourceforge.net/download.php.

Using this, I could just delete the partition that Vista was on and make a new one.  Remember though, you delete the partition, and EVERYTHING will be gone.  Have vista backed up somewhere.

    hi brandon..

How can I keep myself update with the information of new development in windows 7. And I'm also having problem with GMA 900 graphic drivers which is provided by windows 7  update. After installing them, my pc freeze when I start video or any full screen application. So what MS is basically doing for that ?
