General availability for the Windows 7 Beta to end

First off: thank you for your interest in beta testing Windows 7! As we near January 24th, we wanted to update everyone again on the next steps for the Windows 7 Beta. The amount of feedback we have received has been amazing and continues to pour in. We are at a point where we have more than enough beta testers and feedback coming in to meet our engineering needs, so we are beginning to plan the end of general availability for Windows 7 Beta.

Because enthusiasm continues to be so high for the Windows 7 Beta and we don’t want anyone to miss out we will keep the Beta downloads open through February 10th. Customers who have started but not completed the download process  will be able to do so through February 12th.

The shutdown of general availability for the Windows 7 Beta will occur in 3 phases over the course of the next few weeks:

  • Starting January 27th, the Windows 7 page will be updated with a warning that time is running out on downloading the Windows 7 Beta and that we will be limiting downloads shortly. People will be encouraged to register and start the download of the Windows 7 Beta sooner rather than later.
  • February 10th, new downloads of the Windows 7 Beta will no longer be available. People who have already started their Windows 7 Beta download and have not yet finished will still be able to finish their download and are encouraged to do so.
  • February 12th, people will no longer be able to complete their download of the Windows 7 Beta. Anyone who hasn’t finished downloading the Windows 7 Beta will be unable to do so.

Product keys for the Windows 7 Beta will continue to be available. So if you have the Windows 7 Beta but didn’t get a product key you will be able to do so even after February 12th.

MSDN and TechNet Subscribers will continue to have access to the Windows 7 Beta bits throughout the Windows 7 Beta phase. The above dates do not apply to MSDN and TechNet Subscribers.

I just wish I knew when the final version of Windows 7 is coming out and what price it will cost. I wonder if it will be available by May or June b y the latest. They certainly have been doing work on this OS which they should have done with Vista. I have seen screenshots of some skins. It looks somewhat different from Vista visually but not that much. I just want it to function well. I remember when Vista came out a lot of torrent downloads were online. People bootlegged like crazy. There were activation patches and pre-activated copies online. I have to wonder if copies of 7, Ultimate, etc will be online and if so, before or after the valid thing comes out. I remember people's frustrations with Vista and the activated thing. It was almost like wild animals (lol). I know a few people out there won't pay for it and get it from, bittorrent, cheap jokers. It's gonna be funny if Win 7 can be bootlegged that way around the time of its release. Personally, I don't care but I want to know when to expect the darn thing. It looks amazing like I said before and I am all for new stuff. Hope MS doesn't delay or make us wait too long. I think we are seeing a Britney Spears event like with her Blackout album being highly anticipated and being a sort of flop but she took it to another level with Circus and it is a hit. MS did it with Vista and now 7. What can I say, the world revolves the same way in the end for all of us.

    Hi abe_charles,

Only Microsoft can decide when the exact time to launch Windows 7 will be but, rumors on the web indicate some time in the early in the second half of 2009.

If you are want to buy a new PC with Windows 7, there are indications that Microsoft may offer a

"Windows 7 Technology Guarantee Program / Windows 7 Upgrade Program" for PCs purchased just prior to the Windows 7 launch with certain versions of Windows Vista, of course this info is just rumor... but here it is:

    www.mydigitallife.info/.../free-upgrade-to-windows-7-program-for-windows-vista-pc-from-july-1

With so many cool new technologies being put into new computers recently such as solid state drives, blue ray drives and hdmi output I would say that this year will be a great time for people to buy a new PC.  Combined with Windows 7 its a no-brainer!

The tech guarantee, if implemented would be the first chance you'ld have to buy a new PC with the promise of a upgrade to Windows 7 not far behind.

As for pricing, well only Microsoft can confirm those details.  However from experience the best promotional deals seem to be available around launch time for retail boxed versions of Windows.

Personally I would expect pricing to be similar to Windows Vista version pricing, my only hope is that the licensing would be slightly less restrictive for home users allowing more than 1 install for a single boxed copy of Windows similar to the Mac OS X Family Pack.  Probably won't happen but I can dream.

Where can i send technical comments and problems?

    Hi rdoming,

Once you install the Windows 7 beta, there is a big "Send feedback" application shortcut on the desktop, also there are "Send Feedback" links in top right corner of of open windows, as such the link is easily accessible from common applications such as the IE browser, Microsoft Word or even Windows Explorer.

Click on the Send Feedback link to open up the Send feedback application, enter your feedback and click Send.

If its answers you seek you could try here:

    or Technet

The part about this that sounds weird to me is this: If I totally destroy the system, and the Windows DVD I made doesn't work for some reason, you mean I can't get a replacement after that date?

I guess you are expecting very conservative, namby-pamby beta testing? Don't your techs ever really mess up their systems when beta testing? Amazing, if true.

i have the same question as Ryan, will the Beta testers not with tech net still recieve the updates for the beta?  thanks!

  9. Posted on: January 25, 2009 at 11:02PM

I downloaded windows 7 in my opnion its the best OS ever. I hope microsoft doesn't come out with versions of the OS like HOME BASIC, HOME PREMIUM, BUSINESS, AND ULTIMATE. I think microsoft should have only two versions. one for netbook and other one for consumers and businesses.

  10. Posted on: January 26, 2009 at 12:11AM

geneven, you should back up the Windows 7 Beta ISO image so that you can make new DVDs in the future. After Feb. 12th - there will be no way to re-download the Windows 7 Beta ISO images. Our "techs" make sure they keep the ISO image around just in case they need to burn a new DVD to install the Beta and is something I recommend people do in general when beta testing.

bendg92, I am not sure I am understanding your and Ryan's request. What updates are you referring to? You should continue to be able to use Windows Update (and Microsoft Update) just fine with the Windows 7 Beta after Feb. 12th.
