&lt;p&gt;Actually WMP used to be really good at tracking file moves using standard file-system notifications and they would show up in the player library almost instantly, and without interrupting the music. In v12 it&amp;#39;s really bad at this (also reported by others in the beta forums).&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It&amp;#39;s hard to tell whether this is an architectural issue or WMP code does a poor job of implementing Library APIs. Certainly search is so slow that it&amp;#39;s faster to go through Windows search than through the WMP purpose-built search. The latter is also poorly enabled for international features in comparison to Windows search.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;What should be a background task is very intrusive as it seems to slow down my foreground tasks and it puts up status messages of all the unwanted background activity.&lt;/p&gt;

However, I have all my music stored on a network attached storage device. Every time I open WMP, it searches the NAS as if I&amp;#39;m adding the media for the first time. This causes lots of disk activity that is not needed. Perhaps WMP needs to bring back the database of songs like it used before.&lt;/p&gt;
