Windows 7 RTM – Go Get It

This is it people. Windows 7 RTM is available for download from MSDN & TechNet sites! If you have a MSDN subscription you can get Windows 7 RTM in English. On October 1st, the remaining languages will be released, for more information read - Windows 7 RTM Available Today for MSDN & TechNet Subscribers. You can also get the Windows 7 SDK  and the RTM version of the Windows API Code Pack for .NET Framework.

Make sure you get them all today to start testing your applications, and to make sure your applications are ready for Windows 7 RTM! Now is the time to work on your applications to make sure they are Windows 7 compatible. On top of that, you can use new Windows 7 features such as the Sensor and Location Platform, Taskbar, Libraries, Multi-Touch, the new Graphics APIs, the Windows Ribbon, and many other important and exciting Windows 7 technologies to make your application shine on Windows 7.

New Windows 7 Training Kit for Developers - Get it NOW!

To help you get your application on Windows 7 as soon as possible, we updated the Windows 7 Training Kit for Developers for the RTM version and gave it a new look and better functionality. You can still find all existing topics such as: Taskbar, Sensor and Location, Libraries and Shell, DirectX, Multi-touch, Ribbon, etc. No dev was left behind! The kit is built for both native Win32 Windows7TrainingKit

C++ developers and .NET developers, so now most topics have multiple labs.We also added 6 new Application Compatibility labs: Version Checking, Data Redirection, UIPI, Installer Detection, Session 0 Isolation, and High DPI, to help you get over the most common application compatibility issues. All the topics in the training kit include additional information like whitepapers, links to MSDN, and links to videos from Channel 9.

Updated Windows Topic Area on Channel 9

We also gave the Windows topic area on Channel 9 a brand new look and functionality to help you to better choose the right Windows 7 content you need. In the new Windows topic area for Channel 9, you can choose from three main topic areas:

NewC9

While we hope you find all this helpful, this is only the start! We are working on more new and exciting content that will be shipped in the following weeks, so stay tuned.

In the meantime, here is some additional useful information:

  • The Windows page on MSDN is the one-stop shop for Windows client developers
  • At Develop for Windows 7, you can find all the information you need about specific technologies like Direct2D, Taskbar, Sensor and Location, Power Shell 2, Windows Ribbon, and many more
  • Windows Application Compatibility is the one page you want to visit to make sure your application runs properly on Windows 7; it includes content and tools to test and fix many application compatibility issues. Directly accessible from that page, is the Windows 7 Application Quality Cookbook
  • Also still very relevant, is the Windows Vista Application Compatibility Cookbook--most Windows 7 compatibility issues are the direct result of the changes introduced in the Windows Vista timeframe, and are included as topics in this Cookbook (UAC, Session 0 Service Isolation, IE Protected Mode, etc.), which is a great starting point for addressing these issues
  • New Windows 7 videos on the Channel 9 Windows page explore specific features and technologies, and are great “windows” to the Windows engineering team
  • As always, the E7 blog is an amazing source of the engineering back story behind Windows 7
  • Last, but not least, for IT-Pro, we have our SPRINGBOARD SERIES, and edge on TechNet

And, of course, continue to watch for new posts.

Here is a good guide on how to upgrade from Windows 7 RC7100 to Windows 7 RTM.

No one is tell when Windows Feedback Program participants will get their Ultimate copies. Also the ISO versions of the AIK and SDK are again mixed with IA64 architecture too which 90% of users/developers don't need. Please package them with IA64 separate as I'm never going to get an Itanium processor.

What happened to the Ultimate versions for MSDN subscribers?  I downloaded mine yesterday, and then went up this morning to get the key, and it says the downloads for Ultimate are in top downloads, but there's nothing in Top Downloads.  It says the product key is under my product key, but there's no Win7 Ultimate product key there.

So now I have Win7 Ultimate installed, but not activated as I don't have a product key.

Where are the keys and the bits?

    Ho Yochay,

thanks for releasing Windows 7. Installed x32 on 2 machines, setup a homegroup, did some installation, explored some new features - looks great from all angles.

However, due to an (intentional) reconfiguration of my RAID array, I had to start with a full setup from scratch. Unfortunately, I couldn't find out how to boot from USB. So I had to grab a bootable Vista CD (Ultimate x32) for a minimum install, then tried to run Windows 7 Ultimate x64 setup from it. Didn't work: 'The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you are running. Check ... whether you need an x86 or x64 version ...'. Then I tried Windows 7 x32 setup, which worked. Then, from Windows 7, I tried the x64 installation again - same problem. Would I really have to burn a DVD for a one time installation of x64 over x32, or is there any other option, now that I have 2 working x32 machines?

    Hi Anonymuos,

I don't believe people who participated in the Windows Feedback Program (WFP) will get a version of Windows 7 Ultimate, nothing is mentioned on the website here:

    wfp.microsoft.com/AboutPanel.aspx

Participants who joined the WFP way back after Windows Vista launched might have recieved Windows Vista, however I don't think Windows 7 has ever been offered as part of the current Windows Feedback Program.

    Looks like I was wrong:

    windows7center.com/.../microsoft-offers-free-windows-7-ultimate-to-feedback-program-participants

"To encourage your continued participation in the Windows Feedback Program using Windows 7 RC, we will send you a copy of the commercially released version of Windows 7 Ultimate as a gift* within 3 months of its general availability in the US provided that:

    1.You are a US resident of age 18 or older;

2.You signed up for the Windows Feedback Program through the Windows 7 beta Community Preview Program; and

3.You have sent data using the Windows Feedback Program automated instrumentation software from Windows 7 RC for at least 4 months.

We would appreciate it if you continue your participation in the Windows Feedback Program after receipt of the gift and send us data using the automated instrumentation software on the commercially released version of Windows 7. However, it is not a condition of the gift. We may offer more incentives if you do.

    Thank You

    The Windows Experience Team"

However based on the info only 500 people will get Windows 7 free, lucky folks.

    Hi anonymuos,

I would image that only the first 500 people to install the beta and the WFP software are the ones who would get this, I doubt that was me as I had to backup my machine before installing Windows 7 beta and reinstalling the WFP software, and the beta was so popular that Im sure these lucky 500 gifts were quickly filled.

If you were lucky enough to recieve the above email, it states you will get Windows 7 within 3 months of general availability, so it will be a while by the sounds of things.  Just make sure that your address on file is current as

"* The gift will be sent to a postal address in the US only. It is not redeemable for cash and is non-transferrable. If the gift is returned as non-deliverable, it will not be resent"
