Coming Soon: Windows XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC

Windows XP Mode is specifically designed to help small businesses move to Windows 7. Windows XP Mode provides you with the flexibility to run many older productivity applications on a Windows 7 based PC.

All you need to do is to install suitable applications directly in Windows XP Mode which is a virtual Windows XP environment running under Windows Virtual PC. The applications will be published to the Windows 7 desktop and then you can run them directly from Windows 7.

Windows XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC are best experienced on your new Windows 7 PC. We will be soon releasing the beta of Windows XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC for Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Ultimate.

What are the hardware requirements for this? If they are the same as for Hyper-V (64-bit CPU, VT-capable processor, BIOS support for VT & DEP), then how many PC's will be able to use this feature? How may laptops? Will we see "Windows XP Mode Capable" or "Optimized for Windows XP Mode" stickers?

This is simply the next version of Virtual PC which adds native host OS integration (removes the desktop and start menu/taskbar from the guest OS). This should in an ideal scenario work with any OS, esp Vista, but Microsoft is trying to sell if off as an exclusive Windows 7 feature for business reasons. VMWare Workstation 6.5 released in September 2008 aleady does this (called Unity mode instead of XP Mode) and isn't locked for Windows 7 hosts and Windows XP guests. Sadly, THIS WON'T GIVE ME BACK THE FEATURES REMOVED FROM WINDOWS VISTA OR WINDOWS 7 WITH NATIVE INTEGRATION. Users will still have to manage and patch this "Virtual XP". Will this take the "management (patching, defragmenting etc) of the XP VM required" out?

    @7flavor

"THIS WON'T GIVE ME BACK THE FEATURES REMOVED FROM WINDOWS VISTA OR WINDOWS 7 WITH NATIVE INTEGRATION"

What are you talking about? Reversi from Windows 2.03? Has VMWare a free XP licence included? Is VMWare free? The Virtual PC is not locked only for the XP, you can use it for all other purposes too, only the VHD with XP is locked (to prevent, that this VHD is used in unlicenced scenarios).

that's a really great new feature ! The one which can burry down Windows XP right now !

i wonder if the virtual machine XP will need (or not) some special windows update too ? I guess the last patch for XP, won't be included in the virtual process update aren't they ?

  5. Posted on: April 26, 2009 at 6:25PM

What's up with running x64 bit hosts?  Are we going to see a real x64 version of Virtual PC?

  6. Posted on: April 27, 2009 at 2:17AM

slightly offtopic: What's with all that yelling, people?

Shouting around in all capitals doesn't make your point valid or not.

That being said: I do wonder about the manageability in a SMB network. If - from a technical point of view - the XP mode is perceived as a normal XP workstation from lets say WSUS, I do not see a major issue.

stand-alone however - aren't you introducing additional problems in patch management for the XP instance?

Please could you elaborate if this technology will be based on Hyper-V (i.e. a hardware-level hypervisor), and how enterprises would deploy and manage this WinXP virtual machine instance to publish applications to it.  Thank you

I'm guessing that a small kernel of windows xp will be running within windows 7 just for the installation process it's self. I wonder if this would also be true when the applications installed this way are run.

Can anyone shed some light of what will become of Windows XP extended support that was set to be retired in 2014. Will it's life end early as the this new mode of compatibility in a more cleaner OS like windows 7 takes root or will Microsoft keep the support for Windows XP service pack 3 running?

MMnn, just wait a minute. That is unfair business. Let me call Ms Kroes. That will instantly be the end of med-v in 7.

Well it sure would make me think about switching to Windows 7, but if there is no way to simply upgrade to Windows 7, with out automatically transferring my files, then I would still just keep XP, plus everything still works for XP.
